Dyslipidemia is a prominent pathological feature responsible for oxidative stress-induced cardiac damage. Due to their high antioxidant content, dietary compounds, such as aspalathin and sulforaphane, are increasingly explored for their cardioprotective effects against lipid-induced toxicity. Cultured H9c2 cardiomyoblasts, an in vitro model routinely used to assess the pharmacological effect of drugs, were pretreated with the dietary compounds, aspalathin (1 μM) and sulforaphane (10 μM) before exposure to palmitic acid (0.

Purpose: To evaluate the performance of different embryo transfer (ET) operators in a strictly controlled scenario minimizing potential confounders.
Methods: This single-center retrospective cohort study analyzed vitrified-warmed single euploid top-quality day-5 blastocyst transfers performed in non-obese women at the same IVF center by four equally trained clinicians using a standardized ET technique. These strict inclusion criteria allowed excluding all main confounders on the primary study outcome, namely clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) per ET across different operators.

Compelling evidence has demonstrated that rehabilitation through physical exercise, a non-invasive and non-surgical intervention, enhances muscle reinnervation and motor recovery after peripheral nerve injury (PNI) by increasing muscle-derived brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression and triggering TrkB-dependent axonal plasticity. Adenosine has been widely acknowledged to trigger TrkB via A2A receptor (A2AR). Since motor nerve terminals co-express TrkBs and A2ARs and depolarizing conditions increase muscle release of BDNF and adenosine, we examined whether A2ARs activation could recapitulate the functional recovery benefits of intermittent exercise after a nerve crush.

Research on the cerebellum and its functional organization has significantly expanded over the last decades, expanding our comprehension of its role far beyond motor control, including critical contributions to cognition and affective processing. Notably, the cerebellar lateralization mirrors contralateral brain lateralization, a complex phenomenon that remains unexplored, especially across different stages of life. The present work aims to bridge this gap by providing a comprehensive scoping review of the lateralization of motor, cognitive, and affective functioning within the cerebellum across the lifespan.

While we are sympathetic with Stibbard-Hawkes' approach, we disagree with the proposal to switch to a "cognitively modern" null for all species. We argue in favor of a more evidence-driven approach, inspired by recent debates in comparative cognition. Ultimately, parsing the contributions of different genetic and extra-genetic factors in human evolution is more promising than setting a priori nulls.

Introduction: Alongside sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle strength and power, known as dynapenia, increases the risk of functional disability and mortality in older adults. However, engaging in sporting activities during old age appears to enhance functional capacity. The differences in effects between athletes and sedentary individuals, as well as between genders, have yet to be fully clarified.

The rising popularity of bioconjugate therapeutics has led to growing interest in late-stage functionalization (LSF) of peptide scaffolds. α,β-Unsaturated amino acids like dehydroalanine (Dha) derivatives have emerged as particularly useful structures, as the electron-deficient olefin moiety can engage in late-stage functionalization reactions, like a Giese-type reaction. Cheap and widely available building blocks like organohalides can be converted into alkyl radicals by means of photoinduced silane-mediated halogen-atom transfer (XAT) to offer a mild and straightforward methodology of alkylation.

This study focused on the interplay between NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX 2) activation and mitochondrial superoxide (mitoO) formation induced by clinically relevant concentrations of arsenic trioxide (ATO; AsO) in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) cells. Carefully controlled inhibitor studies and small interfering RNA mediated downregulation of p47 (a component of the NOX 2 complex) expression demonstrated that, in an APL cell line, ATO promotes upstream NOX 2 activation critically connected with the formation of mitoO and with the ensuing mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT)-dependent apoptosis. Instead, acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines respond to ATO with low NOX 2 activation, resulting in a state that is non-permissive for mitoO formation.

Gut microbiota analysis, until a few years ago an exclusive research tool, has recently begun to spread among doctors and nutritionists around the world as a means aimed at better understanding patient disorders. As often happens, the commercial push has literally exploded and today there are numerous companies that offer microbiota analysis of dubious quality and/or as a business appliance aimed at selling supplements and the like. For non-experts it can therefore be difficult to find one's way among the numerous proposals.
