J Hepatol

September 2020

Translational & Clinical Research Institute, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Background & Aims: Genetic factors associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remain incompletely understood. To date, most genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have adopted radiologically assessed hepatic triglyceride content as the reference phenotype and so cannot address steatohepatitis or fibrosis. We describe a GWAS encompassing the full spectrum of histologically characterised NAFLD.

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and its complex with matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) are present in a variety of human tissues and extracellular fluids. The aim of this pilot prospective case-control study was to detect NGAL and MMP-9/NGAL complex in human breast milk postpartum in women with normal and pregnancies that developed insulin-depended gestational diabetes mellitus (iGDM). We detected both biomarkers in human breast milk and concentrations were determined at the first day of colostrum secretion and two days after, in 22 normal pregnancies and 13 pregnancies with iGDM.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how to diagnose and treat a kidney disease called primary membranous nephropathy (PMN) by examining specific features in kidney samples.
  • Researchers analyzed the samples from 752 patients to see how conditions like focal segmental sclerosis (FSGS) and tubular atrophy (TA) affected kidney health.
  • They found that certain conditions in the kidneys could predict how well they would function and help decide if patients needed special immune-suppressing treatments.

Contribution of ghrelin to functional gastrointestinal disorders' pathogenesis.

World J Gastroenterol

February 2019

Department of Basic Medical Science, Laboratory of Biology, School of Medicine, University of Athens, Athens 11527, Greece.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are heterogeneous disorders with a variety of clinical manifestations, primarily defined by signs and symptoms rather than a definite underlying cause. Their pathophysiology remains obscure and, although it is expected to differ according to the specific FGID, disruptions in the brain-gut axis are now thought to be a common denominator in their pathogenesis. The hormone ghrelin is an important component of this axis, exerting a wide repertoire of physiological actions, including regulation of gastrointestinal motility and protection of mucosal tissue.

November 2018

Fetal Medicine Unit, 3rd Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Athens Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, 'Attikon' University Hospital, Athens, Greece.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the volume of the placenta during the first trimester can predict fetal growth restriction (FGR) and preeclampsia (PE) in pregnancies.
  • It involved analyzing placentas from various pregnancy groups and assessing the relationship between placental volume and other maternal and fetal characteristics.
  • The results indicate that placental volume is a strong predictor of FGR, especially with abnormal fetal Dopplers, and overall suggests that early placental volume can help identify pregnancies at risk for complications.
