Background & Aims: Genetic factors associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remain incompletely understood. To date, most genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have adopted radiologically assessed hepatic triglyceride content as the reference phenotype and so cannot address steatohepatitis or fibrosis. We describe a GWAS encompassing the full spectrum of histologically characterised NAFLD.

Introduction/objective: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a bowel disorder characterized by pain accompanying defecation or altered bowel habits, divided into diarrhea-predominant, constipation-predominant, and alternating subtypes, whose pathogenesis is considered to include disordered bowel motility. The hormone ghrelin is a growth hormone secretagogue which furthermore affects gastrointestinal motility. We study the association between its genetic polymorphisms and the risk for IBS.

COVID-19 is a systemic infection with a significant impact on the hematopoietic system and hemostasis. Lymphopenia may be considered as a cardinal laboratory finding, with prognostic potential. Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and peak platelet/lymphocyte ratio may also have prognostic value in determining severe cases.

Introduction: Dyslipidemias are common and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. The menopause transition is associated with an atherogenic lipid profile, with an increase in the concentrations of total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides (TG), apolipoprotein B (apoB) and potentially lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)], and a decrease in the concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).
Aim: The aim of this clinical guide is to provide an evidence-based approach to management of menopausal symptoms and dyslipidemia in postmenopausal women.

Background: In recent decades, many studies are focused on different training modalities comparison in patients with cardiac diseases. High intensity aerobic interval training (HIAIT) has been considered as an alternative approach to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) in rehabilitation of patients with chronic heart failure (CHF).
Aim: To highlight the superiority of the modified group-based HIAIT intervention (m-Ullevaal) compared to the moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT), also to encourage physical and rehabilitation medicine (PRM) physicians to apply the m-Ullevaal intervention in routine cardiac rehabilitation (CR) practice.

Patients And Methods: A multicenter prospective observational study was carried out to record anti-thrombotic treatment practice, assess thrombosis recurrence and bleeding, and identify potential risk factors. Adult patients from 18 Oncology Departments throughout Greece were followed-up for 12 months.

Introduction: Secondary pancreatic metastasis from other solid organ malignancy is rare and accounts for less than 2% of all pancreatic tumors. The aim of this study is to highlight that colorectal metastatic disease in the pancreas could be in selected cases an indication for surgery rather than for palliative chemotherapy.

Introduction: The sequential use of a number of new agents (NAs) have improved the overall survival (OS) of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer whose disease progresses after docetaxel (DOC) treatment. The aim of this study was to assess the cumulative survival outcomes of different sequencing strategies by evaluating the individual data from published studies of patients treated with a post-DOC treatment sequence of 2 NAs.
Patients And Methods: The patients' individual data were analyzed to investigate whether different sequencing strategies lead to differences in OS.

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and its complex with matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) are present in a variety of human tissues and extracellular fluids. The aim of this pilot prospective case-control study was to detect NGAL and MMP-9/NGAL complex in human breast milk postpartum in women with normal and pregnancies that developed insulin-depended gestational diabetes mellitus (iGDM). We detected both biomarkers in human breast milk and concentrations were determined at the first day of colostrum secretion and two days after, in 22 normal pregnancies and 13 pregnancies with iGDM.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are heterogeneous disorders with a variety of clinical manifestations, primarily defined by signs and symptoms rather than a definite underlying cause. Their pathophysiology remains obscure and, although it is expected to differ according to the specific FGID, disruptions in the brain-gut axis are now thought to be a common denominator in their pathogenesis. The hormone ghrelin is an important component of this axis, exerting a wide repertoire of physiological actions, including regulation of gastrointestinal motility and protection of mucosal tissue.

The development of the fetal nervous system mirrors general fetal development, comprising a combination of genetic resources and effects of the intrauterine environment. Our aim was to assess the 2 trimester amniotic fluid levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and to investigate its association with fetal growth. In accordance with our study design, samples of amniotic fluid were collected from women who had undergone amniocentesis early in the 2 trimester.

Postpartum nephrotic syndrome in a pregnant woman with rheumatoid arthritis in long-standing remission is rare. Systemic lupus erythematosus can remain undiagnosed, especially in the absence of clinical manifestations. We present the case of a 34-year-old woman (gravida 2, para 1) who underwent a lower-segment cesarean section at 34 weeks and 6 days of gestation because she had developed preeclampsia and nephrotic syndrome.

National registries constitute an invaluable source of information and contribute to the improvement of hemoglobinopathy management. Herein, we present the second updated report of the National Registry for Haemoglobinopathies in Greece (NRHG) and critically discuss the time trends in demographics, affected births, and causes of mortality. Thirty-eight Greek hemoglobinopathy units reported data from diagnosis to the last follow-up or death by retrospectively completing an electronic form.
