Background: In cancer patients, malnutrition is associated with treatment toxicity, complications, reduced physical functioning, and decreased survival. The Prevalence of Malnutrition in Oncology (PreMiO) study identified malnutrition or its risk among cancer patients making their first medical oncology visit. Innovatively, oncologists, not nutritionists, evaluated the nutritional status of the patients in this study.

Cell Based Therapeutic Approach in Vascular Surgery: Application and Review.

Multipotent stem cells - such as mesenchymal stem/stromal cells and stem cells derived from different sources like vascular wall are intensely studied to try to rapidly translate their discovered features from bench to bedside. Vascular wall resident stem cells recruitment, differentiation, survival, proliferation, growth factor production, and signaling pathways transduced were analyzed. We studied biological properties of vascular resident stem cells and explored the relationship from several factors as Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) and regulations of biological, translational and clinical features of these cells.

Molecular profiling in Italian patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer: An observational prospective study.

Objectives: Molecular profiling of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is recommended according to European and Italian guidelines. However, molecular routine assessment remains still heterogeneous. This observational study aimed to take a picture of the real clinical practice in molecular testing and therapeutic choices in advanced Italian NSCLCs.

The reverse metabolic syndrome in the elderly: Is it a "catabolic" syndrome?

Traditional risk factors of cardiovascular death in the general population, including body mass index (BMI), serum cholesterol, and blood pressure are also found to relate to outcomes in the geriatric population, but in a differing direction. A higher body mass index, hypercholesterolemia and hypertension are not harmful but even permit better survival at advancing age. This phenomenon is called "reverse epidemiology" or "risk factor paradox" and is also detected in a variety of chronic disease states such as chronic heart failure.

Sequential Treatment with Pazopanib and Everolimus in Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma.

In metastatic renal cell carcinoma, complete response to first-line antiangiogenic agents is rare and resistance to therapy often develops. Protocols for sequential treatment with angiogenesis and mTOR inhibitors are under evaluation to improve outcomes. In this observational, real-world study, patients received a first-line therapy with pazopanib until discontinuation for disease progression or toxicity, then a second-line with everolimus.

Statin Use and Survival in Patients with Metastatic Castration-resistant Prostate Cancer Treated with Abiraterone Acetate.

Background: Although statin use has been associated with favorable effects in various solid malignancies, no conclusive evidence is available at present. Statins are safe and inexpensive, and may synergize with novel antiandrogen agents abiraterone via pharmacokinetic interactions and decrease substrate availability for de novo androgen biosynthesis.

Objective: To determine whether statin use affects survival in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) treated with abiraterone.

In these cases, the treatment of choice is chemotherapy, alone or in combination with radiotherapy.

PSA declines and survival in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer treated with enzalutamide: A retrospective case-report study.

Rationale: PSA responses have been associated with a survival benefit in patients treated with enzalutamide in retrospective analyses.

Patient Concerns: However the prognostic value of PSA declines in highly pretreated patients receiving enzalutamide remains to be defined.

Diagnoses And Interventations: Medical records of patients with documented mCRPC treated with enzalutamide between September 2011 and August 2016 were reviewed at multiple participating centers and assessed for overall survival (OS), PSA variations, and other variables of interest.

Left Ventricular Postinfarction Pseudoaneurysm: Diagnostic Advantages of Three-Dimensional Echocardiography.

We present a case of posterior left ventricular pseudoaneurysm, a rare but potentially lethal complication of inferior acute myocardial infarction. The clinical findings and the customary, noninvasive diagnostic methods used are illustrated. Particularly, the most evident display obtained by the employment of three-dimensional echocardiography in comparison to those supplied by two-dimensional ultrasonic method was illustrated.

Giant melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (melanotic progonoma) of the head and neck: report of a malignant case.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy is a rare congenital pigmented neoplasm of neural crest origin, locally aggressive, growing rapidly and developing during the 1st year of life. It most commonly arises from the maxilla, cranial vault, and mandible. Occasionally, it exhibits malignant behavior with local lymph nodes involvement.

First-Line PAzopanib in NOn-clear-cell Renal cArcinoMA: The Italian Retrospective Multicenter PANORAMA Study.

Introduction: Pazopanib is a standard first-line treatment for metastatic clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Very few data on its activity in non-clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (nccRCC) are currently available. The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyze efficacy and toxicity of pazopanib in nccRCC patients.

Management of Zygomatic Fractures in Young Patients: Technical Modifications for Aesthetic and Functional Results.

Introduction: The zygomaticomaxillary complex is very vulnerable to injury because of its intrinsically prominent convexity. There are 2 different surgical approaches for the therapy of these fractures: closed reduction and open reduction. In the open reduction 2 or 3 fixation points with related incisions are usually necessary in dislocated fractures: osteosynthesis must be performed starting from zygomaticofrontal suture when dislocated at this site, followed by zygomatic body fixation on the anterior sinus wall, anterior orbital floor margin fixation, and finally orbital floor reconstruction in case of eye globe dislocation with diplopia.

Induction of VX2 para-renal carcinoma in rabbits: generation of animal model for loco-regional treatments of solid tumors.

Background: Animal models of para-renal cancer can provide useful information for the evaluation of tumor response to loco-regional therapy experiments in solid tumors. The aim of our study was to establish a rabbit para-renal cancer model using locally implanted VX2 tumors.

Methods: In order to generate a rabbit model of para-renal cancer, we established four hind limb donor rabbits by using frozen VX2 tumor samples.

Aims: Glucagon like peptide 1 (GLP-1) analogues and dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-4) inhibitors reduce atherosclerosis progression in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and are associated with morphological and compositional characteristics of stable plaque phenotype. GLP-1 promotes the secretion of adiponectin which exerts anti-inflammatory effects through the adaptor protein PH domain and leucine zipper containing 1 (APPL1). The potential role of APPL1 expression in the evolution of atherosclerotic plaque in TDM2 patients has not previously evaluated.

Percutaneous Treatment of Herniated Lumbar Discs with Ozone: Investigation of the Mechanisms of Action.

Methods: Ozone's mechanism of action was investigated using 3 approaches: mathematical models of intervertebral disc space to explore the relationship between disc pressure and volume; ozonolysis experiments using glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) from a Chinese hamster ovary cell line that were similar in composition to GAGs found in human nucleus pulposus; and experiments in which live Yucatan miniature pigs received various concentrations of percutaneous, image-guided intradiscal oxygen-ozone treatment and were examined (after sacrifice) with histology and semiquantitative analysis of disc cytokine concentrations.

Background: Sugammadex is a relatively new molecule that reverses neuromuscular block induced by rocuronium. The particular structure of sugammadex traps the cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene ring of rocuronium in its hydrophobic cavity. Dexamethasone shares the same steroidal structure with rocuronium.

Association between Lp (a) and atherosclerosis in menopausal women without metabolic syndrome.

Aim: The association between Lipoprotein (a) (Lp [a]) and common carotid intima media thickness (IMT) has been evaluated in 222 menopausal women.

Material & Methods: Lp (a) and IMT were measured, carotid ultrasound examination (B-Mode imaging) was performed and mean max IMT was calculated.

Objectives: The BRIDGE study has previously shown a high short-term (12 weeks) adherence rate (>85%) of patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) to subcutaneous self-injections of interferon β-1a using an electronic auto-injection device (RebiSmart®). Gastrointestinal (GI) complications are one of the most limiting cause of use of NSAIDs. Beyond others well defined factors, history of peptic ulcer, older age, Helicobacter pylori infection and use of gastrotoxic drugs may affect their GI safety profile. In particular, the risk of GI complications associated to the use of antiplatelet drugs, especially low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (LDA) should deserve much attention.

AMP18 interacts with the anion exchanger SLC26A3 and enhances its expression in gastric cancer cells.

AMP18 is a stomach-specific secreted protein expressed in normal gastric mucosa but absent in gastric cancer. AMP18 plays a major role in maintaining gastric mucosa integrity and is characterized by the presence of a BRICHOS domain consisting of about 100 amino acids, present also in several unrelated proteins, and probably endowed with a chaperon-like activity. In this work, we exploited a functional proteomic strategy to identify potential AMP18 interactors with the aim to add knowledge on its functional role within gastric cell lines and tissues.

Methods: We compared 30 control subjects to 30 patients with glomerular disease, proteinuria, and glomerular filtration rate > 30 ml/min/1.73 m(2) : membranous glomerulonephritis (n = 13), minimal change disease (n = 2), focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (n = 3), IgA nephropathy (n = 5), lupus nephritis (n = 5), antiphospholipid antibody nephropathy (n = 1), cryoglobulinemic glomerulonephritis (n = 1).

Methods: a literature search was performed on PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct/Scopus, Google Scholar and Google using the keywords 'olecranon', 'fracture', 'internal fixation' and 'tension band wiring', with no limit for time or restrictions to language.

Results: thirty-one clinical articles were selected: 20 retrospective studies, 9 prospective cohort studies, and 2 randomized control trials.

Choroidal neovascularisation as an unusual ophthalmic manifestation of cat-scratch disease in an 8-year-old girl.

To report the first case of choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) that appeared during the primary Bartonella henselae infection in an 8-year-old girl. An 8-year-old girl was referred to our clinic complaining of a central scotoma in the right eye. Fundus examination revealed a bilateral disc oedema and in the right eye neuroretinitis with macular star and CNV, which was confirmed by fluorescein angiography.
