Phytomedicine

January 2021

Department of Pharmacy, University of Naples Federico II, via Domenico Montesano 49, 80131 Naples, Italy; International Research Center for Food Nutrition and Safety, Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang 212013, China. Electronic address:

Background: The most common symptoms of mild upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are sore throat, muffled dysphonia, and swelling and redness of the throat, which result from the inflammation process following acute bacterial or viral infection.

Hypothesis/purpose: As propolis is a natural resinous substance traditionally used to maintain oral cavity and upper respiratory tract health due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, the aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of an oral spray based on poplar-type propolis extract with a known and standardized polyphenol content, on the remission of the symptoms associated with mild uncomplicated URTIs.

Study Design: A monocentric, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was performed.

December 2020

Autism Team Northern-Netherlands, Jonx Department of (Youth) Mental Health and Autism, Lentis Psychiatric Institute, Groningen, Netherlands.

Background: Ultrarare Marshall-Smith and Malan syndromes, caused by changes of the gene nuclear factor I X (NFIX), are characterised by intellectual disability (ID) and behavioural problems, although questions remain. Here, development and behaviour are studied and compared in a cross-sectional study, and results are presented with genetic findings.

Methods: Behavioural phenotypes are compared of eight individuals with Marshall-Smith syndrome (three male individuals) and seven with Malan syndrome (four male individuals).

The emergence of novel resistant markers hampers the efficacy of beta-lactam antibiotics to treat infections caused by micro-organisms carrying such resistances. This study investigated the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, the carpapenem-associated determinants and the molecular epidemiology of Klebsiella pneumoniae showing a New Delhi (NDM) metallo-β-lactamase phenotype, isolated from a patient admitted to intensive care unit of the main hospital for acute care of Molise region, central Italy. Antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed for nineteen antibiotics by disc diffusion and agar dilution methods.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare two strategies for administering oral P2Y inhibitors in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome undergoing invasive treatment: pre-treatment (upstream) versus administering the drugs after angiography (downstream).
  • It involved 1,449 patients and was halted due to a pre-specified rule indicating futility, as there was no significant difference in major health events between the two groups.
  • Both strategies resulted in low rates of ischemic and bleeding complications, with only a minimal numerical difference in event rates, suggesting that the timing of P2Y inhibitor administration may not greatly impact patient outcomes.

The Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) represents the first cause of peripheral vertigo in populations and it is determined by a displacement of otoconial fragments within the semicircular canals. Following the patient's head movements, these fragments, moving by inertia, incorrectly stimulate the canals generating vertigo. The BPPV is diagnosable by observing the nystagmus that is generated in the patient following the Dix-Hallpike maneuver used for BPPV diagnosis of vertical semi-circular canal, and, following the supine head yaw test used for lateral semi-circular canal.
