Mass population movements have altered the epidemiology of tinea capitis (TC) in countries receiving refugees. Periodic monitoring of the local pathogen profiles may serve as a basis for both the selection of appropriate empirical antifungal therapy and the implementation of preventive actions. Therefore, we investigated the impact of an unprecedented immigration wave occurring in Greece since 2015 on the epidemiological trends of TC.

In May 2022, for the first time, multiple cases of mpox were reported in several non-endemic countries. The first ever case of the disease in Greece was confirmed on 8 June 2022, and a total of 88 cases were reported in the country until the end of April 2023. A multidisciplinary response team was established by the Greek National Public Health Organization (EODY) to monitor and manage the situation.

Background: Carbapenem-resistant (CRPA) is a life-threatening healthcare-associated infection affecting especially patients with immunosuppression and comorbidities. We investigated the association between the incidence of CRPA bacteremia, antibiotic consumption, and infection control measures in a hospital during 2013-2018.

Methods: We prospectively recorded the incidence of CRPA bacteremia, antibiotic consumption, use of hand-hygiene solutions, and isolation rates of multidrug-resistant (MDR) carrier patients.

This study aimed at producing an updated assessment of the incidence of anaphylaxis associated with COVID-19 vaccines based on pharmacovigilance data. Anaphylactic reaction and anaphylactic shock data post-COVID-19-vaccination reported from week 52, 2020 to week 1 or week 2, 2023 were collected from the VAERS and EudraVigilance databases, respectively, and analyzed comparatively. Incidence rates were calculated using the corresponding administered vaccine doses as denominators for all licensed vaccines and both platform types (mRNA or vectored).

Aim: The present study aimed to estimate the anaphylaxis rates following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination in children and adolescents in Europe.

Methods: We retrieved data on 371 anaphylaxis cases following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination in children ≤ 17 years old notified to EudraVigilance as of October 8, 2022. Overall, 27,120,512 doses of BNT162b2 vaccine and 1,400,300 doses of mRNA-1273 vaccine have been delivered to children during the study period.

  • * A systematic review of 34 studies found a 6% overall prevalence of leishmaniasis among PWH, with significantly higher rates in Asia (17%) and America (9%) compared to Europe (4%).
  • * Factors like age, sex, and CD4 cell count influenced prevalence, and most cases involved HIV and VL-related Leishmania species, highlighting the need for further research on this co-infection.

Article Synopsis
  • - Recent studies suggest a potential link between low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and a higher incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), indicating worse outcomes for patients with such deficiencies.
  • - The research analyzed 99 melanoma patients and 97 healthy controls, measuring their serum vitamin D levels and comparing various risk factors and characteristics related to CMM.
  • - Although melanoma patients had lower vitamin D levels than healthy controls, the difference did not achieve statistical significance, and no significant associations with cancer severity or characteristics were found.

Background: The response to treatment in patients suffering from skin and nail psoriasis is quantitatively evaluated by monitoring clinical severity and quality of life indexes, especially in the context of clinical trials. Among them, the psoriasis area severity index (PASI), the nail psoriasis area severity index (NAPSI), and the dermatology life quality index (DLQI) are currently the most widely used indexes.

Objective: To study the short-term correlation between PASI, NAPSI, and DLQI in patients with skin and nail psoriasis at baseline and 3 months after treatment initiation.

Double scalping flap: a versatile technique in scalp reconstruction.

J Craniofac Surg

September 2009

Plastic Surgery Department, Andreas Syggros Hospital for Skin and Venereal Diseases, University of Athens, Athens, Greece.

Scalp reconstruction is a challenging area in plastic surgery. The susceptibility of potentially exposed brain tissue is almost always a concern along with the provision of adequate soft tissue coverage in cases of full-thickness defects. The applied reconstructive strategy also affects efficiency in malignant disease treatment providing both local control of the disease and vigorous monitoring for recurrence or metastasis.
