Hookworms infection is a soil-transmitted helminthic disease particularly endemic in developing counties of tropical regions. It is attributed mainly to two human pathogens nematodes namely Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale. Although the disease has been characterized as "neglected" is very diffi cult to be eliminated and the economic consequences are great.

Prevalence of Apolipoprotein E Polymorphisms in Alzheimer's Disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Healthy Elderly: A Northern Greece Study.

Background: Apolipoprotein E ε4 allele (APOEε4) is a major genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). APOEε4 carriers have a higher risk of cognitive impairment and AD in a gene dose-dependent manner. The above notion is investigated in the Greek population.

National registry of hemoglobinopathies in Greece: updated demographics, current trends in affected births, and causes of mortality.

National registries constitute an invaluable source of information and contribute to the improvement of hemoglobinopathy management. Herein, we present the second updated report of the National Registry for Haemoglobinopathies in Greece (NRHG) and critically discuss the time trends in demographics, affected births, and causes of mortality. Thirty-eight Greek hemoglobinopathy units reported data from diagnosis to the last follow-up or death by retrospectively completing an electronic form.

Subtle errors of bladder wall thickness measurement have a significant impact on the calculation of ultrasound-estimated bladder weight. A pilot study.

Aims: Ultrasound-estimated bladder weight (UEBW), is an emerging diagnostic tool, which has been used in both males and females with lower urinary tract dysfunction. The currently acknowledged UEBW calculation methods rely on the accurate measurement of bladder wall thickness (BWT). We aim to identify if subtle errors in BWT measurement have a significant impact on UEBW calculations.

Orf disease in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

Orf disease is a viral infection, affecting patients being involved in the care of livestock either professionally or habitually. It is also known as ecthyma contagious, contagious pustular dermatitis or infectious euphoria being a rare zoonotic disease caused by an epitheliotropic DNA virus from the parapoxvirus group. We report a case of Orf disease affecting the hand of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on treatment with methotrexate and adalimumab, an anti-tumor necrosis factor biological agent.

Potential impact of Helicobacter pylori-related metabolic syndrome on upper and lower gastrointestinal tract oncogenesis.

Both Helicobacter pylori infection and metabolic syndrome present significant global public health burdens. Metabolic syndrome is closely related to insulin resistance, the major underlying mechanism responsible for metabolic abnormalities, and Helicobacter pylori infection has been proposed to be a contributing factor. There is growing evidence for a potential association between Helicobacter pylori infection and insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and related morbidity, including abdominal obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypertension, all of which increase mortality related to cardio-cerebrovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and malignancies.

Abdominal rectus muscle pyomyositis: Report of a case and review of the literature.

Pyomyositis is an uncommon primary bacterial infection of skeletal muscles, usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Predisposing factors for pyomyositis include immunodeficiency, trauma, injection drug use, concurrent infection and malnutrition. The diagnosis, staging of the disease and differential diagnosis are established by ultrasound, CT and MRI.

The precise mechanisms by which central vein stenosis occurs are not well known. Current concepts in central vein stenosis pathophysiology focus on the response to vessel injury model, emphasizing the process of trauma.

Review: Impact of Helicobacter pylori on Alzheimer's disease: What do we know so far?

Background: Helicobacter pylori has changed radically gastroenterologic world, offering a new concept in patients' management. Over time, more medical data gave rise to diverse distant, extragastric manifestations and interactions of the "new" discovered bacterium. Special interest appeared within the field of neurodegenerative diseases and particularly Alzheimer's disease, as the latter and Helicobacter pylori infection are associated with a large public health burden and Alzheimer's disease ranks as the leading cause of disability.

Grading of invasive breast carcinoma through Grassmannian VLAD encoding.

In this paper we address the problem of automated grading of invasive breast carcinoma through the encoding of histological images as VLAD (Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors) representations on the Grassmann manifold. The proposed method considers each image as a set of multidimensional spatially-evolving signals that can be efficiently modeled through a higher-order linear dynamical systems analysis. Subsequently, each H&E (Hematoxylin and Eosin) stained breast cancer histological image is represented as a cloud of points on the Grassmann manifold, while a vector representation approach is applied aiming to aggregate the Grassmannian points based on a locality criterion on the manifold.

Combined Bone Transportation and Lengthening Techniques for the Treatment of Septic Nonunion of the Forearm Followed by Tendon Transfer.

Infected nonunion of a forearm fracture complicated by a considerable skin-muscle defect poses a great challenge to orthopaedic surgeons. The treatment strategy comprises eradication of the infection, ensuring bony union and soft tissue coverage along with functional restoration. We report a case of a 23-year-old man with an open Gustilo-Anderson IIIb fracture complicated by infected nonunion after internal fixation.

Fournier's Gangrene: Lessons Learned from Multimodal and Multidisciplinary Management of Perineal Necrotizing Fasciitis.

Background: Fournier's gangrene (FG) is a rapidly evolving necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum and the genital area, the scrotum as it most commonly affects man in the vast majority of cases. It is polymicrobial in origin, due to the synergistic action of anaerobes and aerobes and has a very high mortality. There are many predisposing factors including diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, immunosuppression, renal, and hepatic disease.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: An update with special focus on the role of gut microbiota.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a significant global health burden in children, adolescents and adults with substantial rise in prevalence over the last decades. Accumulating data from manifold studies support the idea of NAFLD as a hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome, being rather a systemic metabolic disease than a liver confined pathology. Emerging data support that the gut microbiome represents a significant environmental factor contributing to NAFLD development and progression.

Arthroscopically-assisted mini open partial synovectomy for the treatment of localized pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee. A retrospective comparative study with long-term follow up.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to present the long-term results of treatment of localized pigmented villonodular synovitis (LPVNS) comparing two operative procedures of excision of the lesion-the arthroscopic and the arthroscopically assisted mini-open. We hypothesized that the latter approach allowed for treatment of LPVNS with acceptable recurrence rates, complication rates and functional outcomes.

Methods: Between 1990 and 2006, 21 patients with LPVNS were treated with partial synovectomy through an arthroscopically-assisted mini open technique (group A), and 23 patients were treated with an arthroscopic excision of the lesion (group B).

Nationwide surveillance of resistance rates of Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolates from Greek hospitals, 2012-2013.

Purpose To evaluate the in vitro efficacy of several anti-staphylococcal agents against a nationwide collection of contemporary Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolates from several healthcare centres in Greece. Methods Thirty hospitals throughout Greece (18 in Attica) provided all clinical isolates of S.aureus from April 2012 to May 2013 to a central lab to be re-submitted to susceptibility testing.

The natural history of donor hamstrings unit after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a prospective MRI scan assessment.

Purpose: The aim of this prospective study was to assess the natural history of the donor hamstrings, compared to the contralateral knee and thigh.

Methods: In 47 patients who had ACL reconstruction (hamstrings technique), bilateral knees and thighs were investigated using MRI scans, up to 2 years post-operatively.

Results: Tendon regeneration below the knee joint line of the semitendinosus occurred in 30/47 (64 %) patients and of the gracilis tendon in 17/47 (36 %) patients.

A rare case of a parathyroid adenoma inside a parathyroid cyst.

Parathyroid cysts (PCs) are rare lesions, located in the neck and anterior mediastinal region. The vast majority are non-functioning, presented as nodular cervical lesions. Large, non-functioning PCs can manifest with compressive symptoms of the surrounding tissues.
