Current literature indicates that there is a strong correlation between coronary artery disease (CAD) and type 2 diabetes. The arteriosclerotic progression occurs earlier and in a greater extent in the diabetic than in the non-diabetic population. In diabetic subjects, the detection of arterial disease does not always precede the development of an acute arterial incident.

An intraparenchymal pericatheter cyst is a rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt, which is not well described yet. Due to its rarity, lack of characteristic symptoms and radiological features that often mimic brain tumors or abscesses, especially in head computed tomography without contrast can be easily misdiagnosed. We report the case of a 9-year-old girl who was admitted to a peripheral hospital due to severe headaches and vomiting.

Enhanced recovery after surgery or 'fast-track' methods are evidence-based protocols designed to standardize post-operative medical care, improve patient outcomes, promote early recovery, and reduce healthcare expenditure. Fast-track surgery is a multifunctional concept involving pre-, peri- and post-operative measures aiming to reduce the length of hospital stay and morbidity and complication rates, following elective abdominal surgery. Through the optimization of peri-operative care and the recovery process in adherence to these fast-track protocols, improved outcomes are reached, surgical trauma and post-operative stress are reduced, with less surgical pain, reduced complications, and shorter length of hospital stay.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2012, guidelines were published regarding the diagnosis and treatment of urea cycle disorders (UCDs), which occur in about 1 in 35,000 births and can lead to serious health issues like intellectual disability or death.
  • Since then, new treatments and insights have emerged, including the introduction of glycerol phenylbutyrate and advancements in newborn screening and gene therapy, though issues of misdiagnosis and delays remain.
  • The revised guidelines, created with input from UCD experts across Europe, aim to enhance awareness, standardize care practices, and improve patient outcomes, while also identifying areas needing further research.

Article Synopsis
  • MYCN amplification (MNA) in neuroblastoma (NB) can exhibit intratumoural heterogeneity (ITH), with both MNA and non-MNA cell clones present, affecting treatment decisions and outcomes.
  • A study of 99 cases with heterogeneous MNA found that younger patients (<18 months) had significantly better survival rates compared to older patients, regardless of disease stage, indicating age plays a crucial role in prognosis.
  • It’s important to differentiate between heterogeneous and homogeneous MNA in tumors, as individual assessment based on age, disease stage, and genomic characteristics can help prevent overtreatment, especially in infants.
