The aim of this review is to summarise evidence that became available after publication of the 2017 European Respiratory Society statement on the diagnosis and management of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) in 1- to 23-month-old children. The definition of OSAS in the first 2 years of life should probably differ from that applied in children older than 2 years. An obstructive apnoea-hypopnoea index >5 events·h may be normal in neonates, as obstructive and central sleep apnoeas decline in frequency during infancy in otherwise healthy children and those with symptoms of upper airway obstruction.

The Psychological Impact on Parents of Children who Receive an Inconclusive Diagnosis for Cystic Fibrosis following Newborn Screening: A Systematic Mini-Review.

Children (Basel)

January 2024

Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Unit, 3rd Department of Pediatrics, "Attikon" University Hospital, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Rimini 1, 12462 Athens, Greece.

Newborn screening (NBS) has been available for the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF) over the last decades. Through the implementation of NBS, a new designation emerged, that of CF related metabolic syndrome (CRMS) or cystic fibrosis screen positive inconclusive diagnosis (CFSPID). As there is uncertainty regarding the clinical progression of these infants to CF, some studies have investigated the psychological impact of CRMS/CFSPID on their parents.

Background And Aims: Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is characterized by chronic cholestasis with associated pruritus and extrahepatic anomalies. Maralixibat, an ileal bile acid transporter inhibitor, is an approved pharmacologic therapy for cholestatic pruritus in ALGS. Since long-term placebo-controlled studies are not feasible or ethical in children with rare diseases, a novel approach was taken comparing 6-year outcomes from maralixibat trials with an aligned and harmonized natural history cohort from the G lobal AL agille A lliance (GALA) study.

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) are classified into functioning and non-functioning types, with non-functioning tumors being the most common and associated with higher morbidity due to potential tissue invasion and metastasis.
  • Insulinoma is the most prevalent functioning PNET, leading to symptoms from excess insulin, while glucagonoma is another type that causes hyperglycemia from high glucagon levels, and the co-occurrence of both is extremely rare.
  • A literature review identified 8 cases of patients with both insulinoma and glucagonoma from 1992 to 2021, highlighting the need for a multidisciplinary approach for effective diagnosis and treatment.

Front Neurol

September 2023

Department of Neurosurgery and Neurotraumatology, "Attikon" University General Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens Medical School, Athens, Greece.

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) can be caused by a variety of factors and its severity can range from a mild concussion to a complete severing of the spinal cord. Τreatment depends on the type and severity of injury, the patient's age and overall health. Reduction of dislocated or fractured vertebrae via closed manipulation or surgical procedures, fixation and removal of bony fragments and debris that compromise the spinal canal are indicated for decompression of the spinal cord and stabilization of the spine.

Dried blood spot (DBS) microsampling is extensively employed in newborn screening (NBS) and neonatal studies. However, the impact of variable neonatal hematocrit (Ht) values on the results can be a source of analytical error, and the use of fixed Ht for calibration (Ht) is not representative of all neonatal subpopulations. A computational approach based on neonatal demographics was developed and implemented in R language to propose a strategy using correction factors to address the Ht effect in neonatal DBS partial-spot assays.
