Article Synopsis
  • The meta-analysis aimed to compare functional and radiographic outcomes, as well as complications, of medial and lateral approaches in total knee arthroplasty for valgus knee deformity.
  • Ten studies were analyzed, which included data on 1008 patients to assess parameters like Knee Society score, range of motion, and complications.
  • Results indicated that while the medial approach had slightly better functional outcomes, both approaches had comparable surgical times and complication rates, making them similarly effective options for surgery.

Dept. for Innovation in Biological, Agro-food and Forest systems (DIBAF), University of Tuscia, Largo dell'Università snc, 01100, Viterbo, Italy. Electronic address:

The NK-lysin antimicrobial peptide, first identified in mammals, possesses both antibacterial and cytotoxic activity against cancer cell lines. Homologue peptides isolated from different fish species have been examined for their functional characteristics in the last few years. In this study, a NK-lysin transcript was identified in silico from the head kidney transcriptome of the Antarctic teleost Trematomus bernacchii.

Objective: This narrative review analyses factors affecting recurrence of Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) after surgery, such as type, extension and completeness of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). We also described new implications in the management of recurrences after the advent of biologics.

Methods: We identified four topics: definition of disease state; factors linked to recurrence of polyps; evaluation and management of recurrence in clinical practice.

Introduction: The role of the subscapularis (Ssc) tendon does not yet have a well-defined role in RSA. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate if the repair of the Ssc in RSA improves overall clinical and radiographic results and if it has the same results using a medialized design humeral stem compared to a lateralized design.

Methods: Eighty-four consecutive patients undergoing RSA were retrospectively analyzed.

Hepatocellular carcinoma represents an important cause of death worldwide. Early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma patients not suitable for surgery can be treated with a variety of minimally invasive locoregional interventional oncology techniques. Various guidelines in different countries address the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, but the actual treatment is usually discussed by a multidisciplinary tumor board in a personalized manner, leading to potential treatment differences based on Western and Eastern perspectives.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is an invasive cancer accounting for <1% of all cancers and 10-15% of primary liver cancers. Intrahepatic CCA (iCCA) is associated with poor survival rates and high post-surgical recurrence rates whilst most diagnosed patients are not surgical candidates. There is a growing literature suggesting percutaneous ablative techniques for the management of patients with iCCA measuring ≤3 cm with contraindications to surgery as well as for recurrent or residual tumors aiming to provide local cancer treatment and control.

The Role of the Transjugular Intrahepatic Porto-Systemic Shunt in an Emergency Setting.

Life (Basel)

March 2023

Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Oncologic Radiotherapy and Hematology, A. Gemelli University Hospital Foundation IRCCS, L.go A. Gemelli 8, 00168 Rome, Italy.

Transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunt (TIPSS) is an interventional radiology procedure whose aim is to create artificial communication between the portal and the hepatic blood flow in order to reduce the pressure gradient in portal hypertension. The indications to perform a TIPSS procedure can be framed in an elective or emergency setting: refractory ascites to diuretic therapy and secondary prophylaxis of variceal hemorrhage are the most frequent reasons for executing a TIPSS in an election context, while acute uncontrolled variceal bleeding is the principal indication that a TIPSS needs to be performed in an emergency setting. In recent years, the role of the TIPSS has been redefined for several conditions, such as ectopic varices, portal vein thrombosis, Budd-Chiari syndrome, hepatic veno-occlusive disease, and many others.

Nephrolithiasis is an increasingly prevalent condition, especially in high income countries, and is associated with high morbidity. Extraordinary progress in genetics made the identification of genetic forms of nephrolithiasis possible. These genetic diseases are usually rare and do not account for the most common forms of nephrolithiasis that are the result of several factors such as environment, dietary habits, and predisposing genes.
