Intestinal ultrasonography has emerged as a cheap, non-invasive and readily accessible modality for the assessment of a number of gastroenterological diseases. Over the last decade, particularly due to the widespread use of biological agents in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), guidelines regarding management and follow-up advise more regular disease assessment and surveillance in order to guide treatment adjustments, and provide more personalised care. Given the young age of the majority of patients with IBD the availability of an alternative modality to harmful radiation or the risks of endoscopy for this indication offers an appealing advantage.

Combined locoregional treatment of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: State of the art.

World J Gastroenterol

February 2016

Roberto Iezzi, Alessandro Posa, Giuseppe Coppola, Lorenzo Bonomo, Department of Bioimaging, Institute of Radiology, "A. Gemelli" Hospital - Catholic University, 00168 Rome, Italy.

In recent years, a combination of intervention therapies has been widely applied in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). One such combined strategy is based on the combination of the percutaneous approach, such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and the intra-arterial locoregional approach, such as trans-arterial chemoembolization (TACE). Several types of evidence have supported the feasibility and benefit of combined therapy, despite some studies reporting conflicting results and outcomes.

Neo-adjuvant chemo(radio)therapy in gastric cancer: Current status and future perspectives.

World J Gastrointest Oncol

December 2015

Alberto Biondi, Maria C Lirosi, Domenico D'Ugo, Valeria Fico, Francesco Santullo, Roberto Persiani, General Surgery Unit, Department of Surgery, "A. Gemelli" University Hospital Catholic University of Rome, 00168 Rome, Italy.

In the last 20 years, several clinical trials on neoadjuvant chemotherapy and chemo-radiotherapy as a therapeutic approach for locally advanced gastric cancer have been performed. Even if more data are necessary to define the roles of these approaches, the results of preoperative treatments in the combined treatment of gastric adenocarcinoma are encouraging because this approach has led to a higher rate of curative surgical resection. Owing to the results of most recent randomized phase III studies, neoadjuvant chemotherapy for locally advanced resectable gastric cancer has satisfied the determination of level I evidence.

Intestinal microflora can be considered an organ of the body. It has several functions in the human gut, mostly metabolic and immunologic, and constantly interacts with the intestinal mucosa in a delicate equilibrium. Chronic diarrhea is associated with an alteration of gut microbiota when a pathogen invades the gut and also in several conditions associated with intestinal mucosal damage or bowel dysfunction, as in inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, or small bowel bacterial overgrowth.

Cutting-balloon angioplasty of resistant ureteral stenosis as bridge to stent insertion.

Eur J Radiol

July 2011

Department of Bioimaging and Radiological Sciences, Institute of Radiology, "A. Gemelli" Hospital - Catholic University, L.go A Gemelli 8, 00168 Rome, Italy.

Ureteral stenting is a routine, minimally invasive procedure performed for relief of benign or malignant obstruction. In case of ureteral stenosis, to allow a correct insertion of the stent, a predilatation of the ureter stenosis with a conventional balloon catheter can be necessary. In exceptional cases, it can be difficult to advance an 7-8 Fr JJ-catheter over a tight resistant ureter stenosis following unsuccessful high-pressure balloon dilatation.
