Spontaneous Lens Rupture in Congenital Cataract, Presented as Lens Fragment Within the Anterior Chamber.

We report the case of a 60-year-old woman with a congenital anterior polar cataract who presented with a lens fragment within the anterior chamber of her left eye, without a medical history of surgery or trauma. Uneventful phacoemulsification with simultaneous removal of the lens fragment followed. Postoperatively, the patient's visual acuity improved from a perception of light to 20/100.

Bisphosphonates as Supplement to Dental Treatment: A Network Meta-Analysis.

The objective of this study was to assess clinical measurements related to the effectiveness of bisphosphonate (BP) administration as a supplement to conventional dental treatment in patients free of bone-related diseases using a network meta-analysis. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included that provided dental clinical measurements on human patients treated with BPs with or without similar untreated controls or treated with placebo. Information sources included a systematic search of 17 electronic databases up to August 2020, complemented by manual searches.

Antioxidant supplementation, redox deficiencies and exercise performance: A falsification design.

The aim of the present study was to validate the idea of personalized redox supplementation by subjecting individuals to targeted and non-targeted antioxidant supplementation schemes. "Which baby?": a qualitative study exploring the fantasies about the unborn baby among women with hyperemesis gravidarum.

This study aims to explore the conscious fantasies about the unborn baby among women experiencing hyperemesis gravidarum and identify possible clinical implications. Fourteen inpatient women with moderate to severe symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum and between the 12 and 14 weeks gestation participated in semi-structured interviews. Analysis of the transcripts revealed escape and aggression fantasies about the baby, denial of fantasies in the categories tested (name, sex, external and internal characteristics of the baby), freezing of the maternal-fetus bond, and ambivalence toward the continuation of the pregnancy.

Redox basis of exercise physiology.

Redox reactions control fundamental processes of human biology. Therefore, it is safe to assume that the responses and adaptations to exercise are, at least in part, mediated by redox reactions. In this review, we are trying to show that redox reactions are the basis of exercise physiology by outlining the redox signaling pathways that regulate four characteristic acute exercise-induced responses (muscle contractile function, glucose uptake, blood flow and bioenergetics) and four chronic exercise-induced adaptations (mitochondrial biogenesis, muscle hypertrophy, angiogenesis and redox homeostasis).

Chronic administration of plasma from exercised rats to sedentary rats does not induce redox and metabolic adaptations.

The present study aimed to investigate whether endurance exercise-induced changes in blood plasma composition may lead to adaptations in erythrocytes, skeletal muscle and liver. Forty sedentary rats were randomly distributed into two groups: a group that was injected with pooled plasma from rats that swam until exhaustion and a group that was injected with the pooled plasma from resting rats (intravenous administration at a dose of 2 mL/kg body weight for 21 days). Total antioxidant capacity, malondialdehyde and protein carbonyls were higher in the plasma collected from the exercised rats compared to the plasma from the resting rats.

Intratesticular Angiolipoma: A Rare Case of Adipose Tissue Presence in the Testis.

Introduction: Solid, fat-containing tumors of the testes are extremely rare with only a few cases having been reported so far, contrary to the more frequent occurrence of paratesticular lipomatosis. Testicular angiomyolipomas and gonadal involvement in Cowden's disease, although infrequently occurring, are known examples of fat-bearing testicular lesions. Hereby, we present an extremely rare case of intratesticular angiolipoma.

Hospital-wide antifungal prescription in Greek hospitals: a multicenter repeated point-prevalence study.

The aim of the study was to evaluate antifungal prescriptions among hospitalized adult patients in Greek hospitals. This multicenter two-times, 1-day, point-prevalence study was carried out in 2015 and 2017 in five and six hospitals, respectively. Among the 5812 patients screened in both periods, antifungals were prescribed in 129 patients (73 in 2015 and 56 in 2017); antifungals were used as prophylaxis in 31 patients (24%), pre-emptively in 32 (25%), empirically in 38 (30%), and as targeted therapy in 28 (22%).

Saksenaea vasiformis infections: A case of an immunocompetent adult after mild injury and a literature review.

Saksenaea vasiformis is an emerging human pathogen, belonging to the order Mucorales of the subphylum Mucormycotina, most often associated with rhino-cerebral, cutaneous and subcutaneous infections following trauma. A review of the published literature was attempted on the occasion of a cutaneous leg infection with favorable outcome in a young immunocompetent man after mild injury. The overall aim was the facilitation of the study and the integrated understanding of this kind of fungal infections.

Inspiratory muscle training effects on oxygen saturation and performance in hypoxemic rowers: Effect of sex.

Exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia (EIAH) has been consistently reported in elite endurance athletes. This study examined the effects of an inspiratory muscle training protocol (IMT) on resting pulmonary function, end-exercise arterial oxygen saturation and performance in hypoxemic rowers. Incidental finding of Zinner syndrome in a Greek military recruit: a case report of a rare clinical entity.
