In the modified anterolateral minimally invasive surgery (ALMIS) for total hip arthroplasty (THA), the intermuscular plane between the tensor fasciae latae and the gluteus maximus (GM) is exposed, while the anterior ¼ of the GM is detached. There are scarce data regarding this surgical approach. The purpose of the present study is to thoroughly describe this approach, encompassing the anatomical background, and to present the results of a retrospective two-center study of 603 patients.

This report describes a bilateral symmetric accessory coracobrachialis muscle variant coexisting with a unilateral interconnection of the musculocutaneous nerve and the median nerve. An 80-year-old female cadaver was dissected. The bilateral coracobrachialis muscle variant consisted of three heads: two superficial heads and one deep head.

A morphological study on the sphenoid bone ligaments' ossification pattern.

Surg Radiol Anat

November 2023

Department of Anatomy and Surgical Anatomy, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Purpose: The sphenoid bone (SB) extracranial ligaments (ECRLs) are the pterygoalar and pterygospinous ligaments (PTAL and PTSL) that are located at the SB lateral pterygoid plate, and inferior to the foramen ovale (FO). Their ossification may affect the mandibular nerve's distribution. The intracranial ligaments' (ICRLs) ossification (the caroticoclinoid ligament-CCLL, the anterior and posterior interclinoid ligaments-AICLL and PICLL) may impede the approaches to the sella.

Purpose: The report describes four cases of accessory bundles (ABs) or fibers connecting the muscles of the anterior with the posterior arm compartment. The ABs morphology (pure muscular or musculofascial or musculoaponeurotic) is described emphasizing their attachment points, characterized as muscles' interconnections.

Materials And Methods: Four formalin-embalmed donated male cadavers were dissected.

Coracobrachialis muscle morphology and coexisted neural variants: a cadaveric case series.

Surg Radiol Anat

September 2023

Department of Anatomy and Surgical Anatomy, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health and Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the anatomy of the coracobrachialis muscle and its related musculocutaneous nerve, focusing on their variations in a sample of 27 cadaveric arms.
  • It identifies four morphological types of the coracobrachialis muscle and different courses of the musculocutaneous nerve, which can be important for surgical procedures.
  • Understanding these variations can help surgeons avoid nerve injuries during surgeries on the anterior arm compartment.

Purpose: This report describes a bilateral persistent median artery (PMA) originating from the ulnar artery and terminating at different levels of the upper limb. The PMA coexisted with a bilateral bifid median nerve (MN) and two bilateral interconnections (ICs characterized with the symbol -) of the MN with the ulnar nerve (UN) (MN-UN) and a unilateral reverse IC (UN-MN). Emphasis was given to the artery's developmental background.

There are scarce data regarding foot osteomyelitis (FO) caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Gram-negative bacteria (GNB). This study investigates the causative organisms, the diagnostic and therapeutic approach and the outcome of these infections. All patients with FO caused by MDR and/or XDR GNB who received treatment in the Department of osseous infectious diseases of the "Attikon" University Hospital of Athens, Greece, were recorded and evaluated during a six-year-period.

Somatic awareness as well as anxiety may be assessed with the Modified Somatic Awareness Questionnaire (MSPQ). The present study validates and adapts the Greek version of the MSPQ (MSPQ-GR) in individuals with chronic low-back pain. The MSPQ-GR along with the Greek versions of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADs-GR) and the Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ-GR) were completed by 69 consecutive individuals suffering from chronic low-back pain.

mRNA vaccines encoding tumor antigens may be able to sensitize the immune system of the host against cancer cells, enhancing antigen presentation and immune response. Since the breakout of the COVID19 pandemic, interest in mRNA vaccines has been accelerating, as vaccination against the virus served as a measure to limit disease spread. Given that immunotherapy has been the cornerstone of melanoma treatment over the last several decades, further innate immunity enhancement by targeted mRNA vaccines could be the next pivotal achievement in melanoma treatment.

Pathological fractures of the proximal radius are exceedingly rare. Here, a case of an 81-year-old female diagnosed with multiple myeloma 15 years ago who suffered a pathological fracture of her left proximal radius is presented. Due to the fracture's proximity to the elbow joint and the lack of adjacent healthy bone tissue, a resourceful surgical intervention was implemented using a pediatric flexible nail supplemented by polymethacrylate cement injection.

Purpose: The study report describes a rare bilateral variant of a six- and five-headed coracobrachialis muscle (CB). The musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) (bilaterally) and the median nerve (MN) lateral root (unilaterally) pierced CB heads, separating superficial from deep heads.

Methods: The variant bilateral CB was identified in a 78-year-old formalin-embalmed male cadaver, derived from a body donation program after a signed informed consent.

Prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) caused by fungi, although relatively rare, represent a major surgery-related complication. An extremely rare fungal PJI, following revised total knee replacement (TKR) caused by , is reported, and a meticulous review of similar cases is provided. A 74-year-old female, who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty 10 years ago and a revision surgery three weeks ago, presented with signs and symptoms of PJI.

Fungal hip prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) are rare but severe infections. Their incidence has increased in the last decades due to the aging population, as well as due to the increased number of immunosuppressed hosts. The present review of all published fungal PJIs in hip arthroplasties aims to present as much data as possible for both medical and surgical treatment options, so that the best applicable management may be concluded.

Prophylactic anticoagulation (AC) with low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) following hip fracture has reduced the incidence of severe thromboembolic events. However, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) remains a serious complication in these patients. We report an unusual case of thrombosis due to severe HIT in a 75-year-old female patient following intramedullary nailing for a hip fracture.

To report a rare event of a retrograde flow of cement leakage during balloon kyphoplasty and discuss the possible mechanism. We present a 55-year-old male patient, who underwent a 4-level balloon kyphoplasty for Langerhans histiocytosis that had spread to the spine. With the patient prone under general anesthesia, intrathoracic pressure was raised as a precaution measure to prevent cement embolic complications as a protocol reported elsewhere.
