Electronic address:

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) encompass a diverse population of immature myeloid cells categorized into granulocytic and monocytic groups. These cells exert immune-suppressive functions within the tumor microenvironment, primarily influenced by cytokines and tumor-associated factors. Research has consistently linked elevated MDSC levels to unfavorable cancer prognosis and poor responses to immunotherapies.

Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Granada (UGR), Av. Ilustración, 60, Granada 18016, Spain; Instituto de Investigación Biosanitaria ibs.GRANADA, Granada, Spain. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: There is some evidence that anthropometric measurements can be associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Nevertheless, there is no comprehensive consensus on which anthropometric index is the best for evaluating the risk and predicting T2DM, especially in older adults. For this reason, we compared the performance of six indices for detecting T2DM in a population of Colombian older adults.

This study investigates the wound-healing potential of Euphorbia guyoniana latex (EGL) in male Wistar rats, along with its biochemical composition and biological activities. Phytochemical analysis identified moderate levels of phenolics, flavonoids, and tannins, with HPLC revealing five phenolic compounds. EGL demonstrated strong antioxidant activity in DPPH assays, surpassing ascorbic acid in protecting red blood cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates two surgical approaches (no-touch vs. superior mesenteric artery) in patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, focusing on circulating tumor cells during surgery.
  • *Patients were randomly assigned to each group, and samples were taken to measure tumor cell activity at different surgical stages.
  • *Results showed no significant differences in tumor cell mobilization or metastasis-free survival between the two approaches, but patients with tumor cell clusters mobilized during surgery had a higher rate of distant metastases within the first year.

Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIEd) offers advanced tools that can personalize learning experiences and enhance teachers' research capabilities. This paper explores the beliefs of 425 university teachers regarding the integration of generative AI in educational settings, utilizing the UTAUT2 model to predict their acceptance and usage patterns through the Partial Least Squares (PLS) method. The findings indicate that performance expectations, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, and hedonic motivation all positively impact the intention and behavior related to the use of AIEd.

We introduce an innovative β-cyclodextrin (βCD)-prototype for delivering nucleic acids: "geometrically frustrated amphiphiles (GFAs)." GFAs are designed with cationic centers evenly distributed across the primary O6 and secondary O2 positions of the βCD scaffold, while hydrophobic tails are anchored at the seven O3 positions. Such distribution of functional elements differs from Janus-type architectures and enlarges the capacity for accessing strictly monodisperse variants.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how different training volumes (low, moderate, high) in bench-press exercises with interrepetition rest periods impact strength gains and neuromuscular adaptations in resistance-trained men.
  • Forty-three men were divided into three groups completing varied repetitions over eight weeks, gradually increasing the intensity from 70% to 85% of their one-repetition maximum.
  • All groups showed significant improvements in strength, but no major differences were found in performance gains among the groups, despite the differences in training volume.

Background: Inflammation promotes atherogenesis. Randomized controlled trials of anti-inflammatory therapies for prevention after stroke have not yet demonstrated clear benefit. IL-6 (interleukin-6) and hsCRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) are independently associated with major adverse cardiovascular events poststroke and may guide patient selection in future randomized controlled trials.

Background: LAMVYX was a multicenter, single-arm, phase 2 trial designed to validate the safety and efficacy of CPX-351 in patients aged 60-75 years with newly diagnosed, secondary acute myeloid leukemia and to generate evidence on key issues not addressed in the preceding regulatory pivotal trial.

Methods: The primary end point of the study was the complete remission (CR)/CR with incomplete hematologic recovery (CRi) rate after induction. Eligible patients were recommended to undergo allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation after the first consolidation cycle.

This article proposes a method to improve the efficiency of solar power plants by estimating and forecasting the spatial distribution of direct normal irradiance (DNI) using a sensor network and anemometer data. For this purpose, the proposed approach employs spatio-temporal kriging with an anisotropic spatio-temporal variogram that depends on wind speed to accurately estimate the distribution of DNI in real-time, making it useful for short-term forecast and nowcast of DNI. Finally, the method is validated using synthetic data from varying sky conditions, outperforming another state-of-the-art technique.

Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of disability and preventable deaths worldwide, but it should be differentiated from tobacco use disorder, which is, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a mental disorder. The rapid delivery of nicotine to the brain activates acetylcholine receptors and stimulates the release of dopamine, both systems implicated in other mental disorders. Rates of tobacco use disorder are much higher among people suffering from other mental disorders and these patients find it more difficult to quit.

: The beneficial effects of the flavonoid chrysin can be reduced by its poor oral bioavailability. It has been shown that chrysin-8-C-glucoside () has a better absorption capability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of this glucoside, as well as the respective hexa-acetate derivative and the hexa-ethyl carbonate derivative since the inclusion of moieties in bioactive molecules may increase or modify their biological effects.

The nitrogen-fixing rhizobia-legume symbiosis relies on a complex interchange of molecular signals between the two partners during the whole interaction. On the bacterial side, different surface polysaccharides, such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and exopolysaccharide (EPS), might play important roles for the success of the interaction. In a previous work we studied two Sinorhizobium fredii HH103 mutants affected in the rkpK and lpsL genes, which are responsible for the production of glucuronic acid and galacturonic acid, respectively.

Int J Mol Med

January 2025

Department of Medical Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Immunology, School of Medicine, University of Seville, 41009 Seville, Spain.

Src‑associated in mitosis 68 kDa protein (Sam68) is a protein encoded by the heteronuclear ribonucleoprotein particle K homology (KH) single domain‑containing, RNA‑binding, signal transduction‑associated protein 1 (known as ) gene in humans. This protein contains binding sites for critical components in a variety of cellular processes, including the regulation of gene expression, RNA processing and cell signaling. Thus, Sam68 may play a role in a variety of diseases, including cancer.
