Background: Exposure to antigens is crucial for child immune system development, aiding disease prevention and promoting infant health. Some common food antigen proteins are found in human breast milk. However, it is unclear whether gluten antigens linked to celiac disease (CD) are transmitted through breast milk, potentially impacting the development of the infant's immune system.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed data from 5667 patients diagnosed with infective endocarditis (IE) across 46 hospitals in Spain from 2008 to 2021, finding that only 1.7% were HIV-infected.
  • HIV-infected patients tended to be younger, predominantly male, and had specific features like higher rates of tricuspid location and community-acquired infections, but fewer surgical interventions.
  • Despite these differences, the study concluded that HIV status did not significantly affect in-hospital or one-year mortality rates for patients with IE.

Immunoregulatory properties of melatonin in the humoral immune system: A narrative review.

Immunol Lett

October 2024

Department Medical Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Immunology, University of Seville Medical School, Spain.

Melatonin is the major product both synthesized and secreted by the pineal gland during the night period and it is the principal chronobiotic hormone that regulates the circadian rhythms and seasonal changes in vertebrate biology. Moreover, melatonin shows both a broad distribution along the phylogenetically distant organisms and a high functional versatility. At the present time, a significant amount of experimental evidence has been reported in scientific literature and has clearly shown a functional relationship between the endocrine, nervous, and immune systems.

Advanced splenic flexure tumors are uncommon and have a higher risk of relapse. To ensure that the resection includes the entire area of lymphatic drainage with a complete mesocolic excision (CME), a left extended colectomy is needed. In peritoneal carcinomatosis, there is often extensive involvement of the sigma and splenic flexure of the colon.

Background: The increasing incidence of coeliac disease is leading to a growing interest in active search for associated factors, even the intrauterine and early life. The exposome approach to disease encompasses a life course perspective from conception onwards has recently been highlighted. Knowledge of early exposure to gluten immunogenic peptides (GIP) in utero could challenge the chronology of early prenatal tolerance or inflammation, rather than after the infant's solid diet after birth.

Unveiling the Impact of Gelation Temperature on the Rheological and Microstructural Properties of Type A Gelatin Hydrogels.

Polymers (Basel)

June 2024

Departamento de Ingeniería Química, Facultad de Química, Universidad de Sevilla, 41012 Sevilla, Spain.

Gelatin-based hydrogels have garnered significant attention in the fields of drug delivery systems and tissue engineering owing to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, elasticity, flexibility and nontoxic nature. However, there is a lack of information regarding type-A-gelatin-based hydrogels. In this sense, the main aim of this work was the evaluation of the properties of type-A-gelatin-based hydrogel achieved using two different gelation temperatures (4 °C and 20 °C).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on how different titanium surface treatments (MACH, AE, GBLAST, GBLAST + AE) influence the effectiveness of dental implants by affecting osseointegration, which is essential for successful implantation.
  • - Four surface types were analyzed for their physical properties, revealing that GBLAST and GBLAST + AE surfaces exhibited better roughness and microhardness, which are important for cellular interaction and implant stability.
  • - The research found that human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs) showed better viability and osteogenic differentiation on GBLAST surfaces compared to human epithelial stem cells (hAECs), indicating that specific implant surface treatments can enhance bone-forming capabilities.

Current clinical diagnostic imaging methods for lung metastases are sensitive only to large tumours (1-2 mm cross-sectional diameter), and early detection can dramatically improve treatment. We have previously demonstrated that an antibody-targeted MRI contrast agent based on microparticles of iron oxide (MPIO; 1 μm diameter) enables the imaging of endothelial vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1). Using a mouse model of lung metastasis, upregulation of endothelial VCAM-1 expression was demonstrated in micrometastasis-associated vessels but not in normal lung tissue, and binding of VCAM-MPIO to these vessels was evident histologically.

Improved recycling of a gasification fly ash: An integrated waste management approach within the framework of a Circular Economy.

Waste Manag

October 2024

University of Seville, School of Engineering, Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department, Camino de los Descubrimientos s/n 41092, Seville, Spain. Electronic address:

A Circular Waste Management alternative is considered in this paper in which a complete ash valorization process is proposed for an Integrated Gasification with Combined Cycle fly ash, trying to extract maximum value from this waste before it is discarded. In the paper, germanium, a scarce resource vital in our modern society, is first extracted from fly ash using water, with an extraction yield of 85%, and subsequently, the leached fly ash is used in the manufacture of fire-resistant boards containing 60% ash, thereby avoiding its disposal in a landfill. The potential environmental impact caused by the two stages of the process was analyzed, and the final effluent was considered to achieve a zero-discharge objective.

Adolescence is characterized by increased vulnerability to addiction and ethanol (EtOH) toxicity, particularly through binge drinking (BD), a favored acute EtOH-ingestion pattern among teenagers. BD, highly pro-oxidant, induces oxidative stress (OS), affecting skeletal muscle (SKM), where selenium (Se), an antioxidant element and catalytic center of selenoproteins, is stored, among other tissues. Investigating the effects of Se supplementation on SKM after BD exposure holds therapeutic promise.

JCI Insight

July 2024

Institute of Biomedicine of Seville, Virgen del Rocío University Hospital, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, University of Seville, Clinical Unit of Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Parasitology, Seville, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the effects of vedolizumab in combination with antiretroviral therapy (ART) on HIV-1 spread after stopping ART in new HIV-1 infections.
  • Participants were given monthly vedolizumab infusions before halting ART, and despite the treatment being safe, no one achieved undetectable HIV levels after 24 weeks off ART.
  • The results indicated that blocking the α4β7 protein may play a key role in reducing the HIV-1 reservoir, suggesting it could be important for future HIV cure strategies.
