Objective: Being able to characterize functional connectivity (FC) state dynamics in a real-time setting, such as in brain-computer interface, neurofeedback or closed-loop neurostimulation frameworks, requires the rapid detection of the statistical dependencies that quantify FC in short windows of data. The aim of this study is to characterize, through extensive realistic simulations, the reliability of FC estimation as a function of the data length. In particular, we focused on FC as measured by phase-coupling (PC) of neuronal oscillations, one of the most functionally relevant neural coupling modes.

Introduction: Globally, around 10% of children are born preterm and are more at risk of negative developmental outcomes. However, empirical evidences and theoretical reasoning also suggest that premature birth can be a susceptibility factor, increasing sensitivity to the environment for better and for worse. Because available findings are controversial, with the current scoping review we will explore if, based on the available literature, preterm birth can be seen as an environmental sensitivity (ES) factor.

Migraine is particularly common in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and has been linked to the dysfunction of the brain circuitry modulating the peripheral nociceptive stimuli. Using MRI, we explored whether changes in the resting state-functional connectivity (RS-FC) may characterize the occurrence of migraine in patients with MS. The RS-FC characteristics in concerned brain regions were explored in 20 MS patients with migraine (MS+M) during the interictal phase, and compared with 19 MS patients without migraine (MS-M), which served as a control group.

New classification of autoimmune neuropathies based on target antigens and involved domains of myelinated fibres.

J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry

January 2022

National Reference Center for Rare Peripheral Neuropathies and Department of Neurology, CHU Limoges (Dupuytren Hospital), Limoges, France.

Article Synopsis
  • - Autoimmune neuropathies are generally classified as either demyelinating or axonal based on their pathology and electrophysiology, but some disorders challenge this binary classification by showing characteristics of both types.
  • - Certain autoimmune conditions, while not showing demyelination, can still produce nerve conduction changes typical of demyelinating neuropathies, highlighting inconsistencies in the traditional classification system.
  • - A new classification system is suggested, focusing on the specific areas of myelinated fibers affected and the associated antigens, aiming to clarify diagnosis and reconcile conflicting findings in autoimmune neuropathies.

Background: Dermatitis of surrounding skin may complicate hard-to-heal leg ulcers, delaying wound healing. The coexistence of hard-to-heal leg ulcers and irritant or allergic contact dermatitis may create difficulties for both diagnostic and therapeutic management.

Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the incidence of dermatitis occurring in the surrounding skin in a population affected by hard-to-heal leg ulcers during treatment, and to differentiate between allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) with the use of a patch test.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to validate a modified Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (mSOFA) that uses the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS) instead of the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) to predict ICU mortality.
  • Despite differences in the mean scores, both SOFA and mSOFA were similarly effective in predicting ICU mortality, indicating that RASS can serve as a reliable substitute for GCS.
  • The findings suggest that incorporating alternative neurologic assessments like RASS into severity scoring systems can maintain their predictive validity for patient outcomes in critical care settings.

Integrated analysis of concomitant medications and oncological outcomes from PD-1/PD-L1 checkpoint inhibitors in clinical practice.

J Immunother Cancer

November 2020

Melanoma, Cancer Immunotherapy and Development Therapeutics Unit, Istituto Nazionale Tumori IRCCS Fondazione "G. Pascale", Napoli, Italy.

Background: Concomitant medications, such as steroids, proton pump inhibitors (PPI) and antibiotics, might affect clinical outcomes with immune checkpoint inhibitors.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter observational retrospective study aimed at evaluating the impact of concomitant medications on clinical outcomes, by weighing their associations with baseline clinical characteristics (including performance status, burden of disease and body mass index) and the underlying causes for their prescription. This analysis included consecutive stage IV patients with cancer, who underwent treatment with single agent antiprogrammed death-1/programmed death ligand-1 (PD-1/PD-L1) with standard doses and schedules at the medical oncology departments of 20 Italian institutions.

The paper proposes a procedure based on data envelopment analysis (DEA) in order to identify the optimal dimension for inter-municipal cooperation in waste management. Given: (a) a set of decision making units (DMUs) and a production process that virtually transforms municipal expenditure in different amounts of sorted and unsorted waste, (b) a set of exogenous variables conditioning the operational environment of the DMUs and (c) a variable used for measuring the dimension of inter-municipal cooperation, the procedure realizes an iterative correction of input values and efficiency scores to purge, first, the effects of the exogenous variables, and then those of the dimensional variable. In this way, an indicator of the impact of the dimensional variable on the efficiency is obtained for each of the observed DMUs.

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) promote citizens' participation in community life through several different kinds of organizations: some more informal (such as associations and volunteering groups), others more formal or public (such as charities and foundations). This heterogeneity, as well as the well-known peculiarities of NPOs when compared to profit and public ones, poses new challenges to their management. In the constant need to find balance between financial constraints and social value, a main resource for NPOs is the management of intangible assets, such as knowledge, positive relationships within the organization and with users, external image, loyalty and commitment, and so on.
