Background: The clinical frailty scale (CFS) was used as a triage tool for medical decision making during the COVID-19 pandemic. The CFS has been posed as a suitable risk marker for in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients. We evaluated whether the CFS is associated with mortality 24 months after hospitalisation for COVID-19.

Under physiological circumstances, the endothelium and the glycocalyx are responsible for maintaining vascular tone, capillary permeability, and hemostasis, and controlling inflammation. In hyperinflammation, the endothelium and glycocalyx become damaged due to the excessive production of certain toxic proteins, along with an overwhelming release of cytokines.

Between unity and disparity: current treatment protocols for common orofacial clefts in European expert centres.

There is considerable variability in the management of common orofacial clefts across Europe, reflecting differing opinions on optimal treatments. An updated overview of treatment protocols for orofacial clefts across 26 expert centres in the European Reference Network CRANIO is presented here. A structured questionnaire was distributed to map the surgical protocol and additional standard procedures for cleft palate (CP), unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), and bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP).

Integrating youth mental health practice nurses into general practice: effects on outpatient mental health care utilization among children and adolescents.

Integration of child mental health services in general practice may improve early detection and treatment and reduce strain on specialized services. In this study we investigated whether outpatient mental health care utilization and associated costs in children and adolescents were affected by the introduction of youth mental health practice nurses (YMHPNs) in general practice. We linked healthcare data of the Rijnmond Primary Care Database to municipal registry data on child outpatient mental health care expenditures between 2019 and 2022.

Surgical specialists face higher a risk for malpractice compared to their non-surgical colleagues.

In previous studies, surgical specialties accounted for most malpractice claims. The objective of the present study was to determine the risk for malpractice claims for physicians working in hospitals. A retrospective observational study using anonymized closed malpractice claims between 2007 up to 2021 from two Dutch insurers was carried out.

Impact of intraoperative hypotension during laparoscopic liver resection on postoperative complications including acute kidney injury.

Background: Postoperative acute kidney injury is associated with an increase in hospital length of stay and mortality. Intraoperative hemodynamics and fluid management may contribute to acute kidney injury. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between intraoperative duration of hypotension with adverse events after laparoscopic liver resection.

Clinical and patient-reported outcomes after oncoplastic versus conventional breast conserving surgery-a longitudinal, multicenter cohort study.

Background: Oncoplastic breast conserving surgery (OP-BCS) is becoming increasingly popular to avoid mastectomy or optimize cosmetic outcomes of breast conserving surgery (BCS). Few studies have compared clinical outcomes and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) of OP-BCS to conventional BCS (C-BCS). This study aims to compare clinical outcomes and short and long-term PROs after OP-BCS and C-BCS in a large prospective breast cancer cohort.

Mapping challenges in the accessibility of treatment products for urea cycle disorders: A survey of European healthcare professionals.

Current management guidelines for urea cycle disorders (UCDs) offer clear strategies, incorporating both authorized and non-authorized medicinal products (including intravenous formulations and products regulated as food). These varying product categories are subject to specific accessibility challenges related to availability, reimbursement, and pricing. The aim of this study is to identify potential obstacles to optimal UCD treatment implementation in European clinical practice.

Caesarean scar pregnancy complicated by partial rupture in the second trimester: A case report.

This case report examines caesarean scar pregnancy, a rare but significant complication associated with increasing global caesarean rates. It explores diagnostic challenges, therapeutic interventions, and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. This report details the case of a patient at 13 + 4 weeks of amenorrhea presenting with severe abdominal pain, diagnosed with caesarean scar pregnancy and scar dehiscence causing major haemorrhage.

Qualitative Descriptive Research Investigating Burn Survivors' Perspectives on Quality of Care Aspects.

Burn care quality indicators are used to monitor and improve quality of care and for benchmark purposes. The perspectives of burn survivors, however, are not included in current sets of quality indicators while patient-centred care gains importance. The aim of this study was to explore burn survivors' perspectives on quality aspects of burn care, which was used to translate their perspectives into patient-centred quality of care indicators.

Patient access to perioperative chemotherapy with fluorouracil, leucovorin, oxaliplatin and docetaxel in patients with resectable gastric cancer in the Netherlands.

Background: The FLOT4 trial demonstrated superior survival of perioperative chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil, oxaliplatin, and docetaxel (FLOT) compared to anthracycline triplets for resectable gastric cancer. These results were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) congress in June 2017 and published in April 2019. However, adoption of novel treatments in clinical practice often encounters delays.

Characteristics, treatments and outcomes in patients with severe burn wounds; a 10 year cohort study on acute and reconstructive treatment.

Reports on treatment characteristics and long term outcomes for severe burns are scarce, while the need to compare outcomes of novel treatment modalities to standard of care is increasing. Our national database on burn treatment enabled analysis of patient as well as treatment characteristics during acute treatment and following reconstructive procedures. Furthermore, outcome data of longitudinal scar assessments were analysed from a single burn centre database.

Repetitive daily oxytocin treatment reduces weight gain but not acute neonatal procedural pain.

Background: While the incidence of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission steadily increases, neonatology lacks evidence of a safe, effective, and preventive analgesic for treating procedural pain. Given its role in nociception and promoting healthy neurodevelopment, the endogenous neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) emerges as a promising candidate.

Methods: This study investigates the use of daily repeated subcutaneous OT (1 mg/kg) treatment in an established model of neonatal repetitive procedural pain and assesses the effectivity of OT treatment on mechanical sensitivity and body weight.

Intramedullary nailing for concomitant extra-articular ulnar head fractures in distal radial fractures.

Four adult female patients were treated with an intramedullary Steinmann pin for an unstable extra-articular distal ulnar fracture associated with a distal radial fracture treated with plate osteosynthesis. All showed good radiographic and functional outcomes. One patient required removal of the Steinmann pin.

The bio-artificial pancreas to treat type 1 diabetes: Perspectives from healthcare professionals in the Netherlands.

Aims: Healthcare professionals are relevant stakeholders because of their gatekeeper role in the clinic. This study aims to explore their perspectives on the potential future clinical implementation of the bio-artificial pancreas (BAP) for people with type 1 diabetes, and suitable target groups.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 healthcare professionals, including endocrinologists, nurses, and pancreas transplant surgeons.

Sown Without Care: Dutch Eugenicists and their Call for Optimising Developmental Conditions, 1919-1939.

This paper explains the coexistence of concerns about hereditary degeneration and opposition to reproductive intervention such as sterilisation in Dutch eugenic discourse during the interwar years. Based on an analysis of textbooks, periodical publications and printed lectures, I will show how eugenicists positioned themselves within the domain of public health by framing their domain of inquiry as a pivotal addition to curative medicine and sanitary reform. Dutch eugenicists rendered this symbiotic relationship conceptually plausible by combining criticism of genetic determinism and Lamarckian viewpoints on heredity.

Holmium-166 radioembolisation dosimetry in HCC.

Purpose: To evaluate dosimetry, dose-response and dose-toxicity relationships for holmium-166 (Ho) radioembolisation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Methods: Thirty-one patients with hepatocellular carcinoma were included in the HEPAR Primary study (NCT03379844, registered on December 20th, 2017) and underwent Ho-microspheres radioembolisation. Linear mixed models assessed the association between tumour absorbed doses and response based on mRECIST both on tumour and patient level.

Automated planning of curved needle channels in 3D printed patient-tailored applicators for cervical cancer brachytherapy.

Patient-tailored intracavitary/interstitial (IC/IS) brachytherapy (BT) applicators may increase dose conformity in cervical cancer patients. Current configuration planning methods in these custom applicators rely on manual specification or a small set of (straight) needles. This work introduces and validates a two-stage approach for establishing channel configurations in the 3D printed patient-tailored ARCHITECT applicator.
