Association between Toxoplasma gondii exposure and abdominal pain: An age- and gender-matched case-control seroprevalence study.

Eur J Microbiol Immunol (Bp)

May 2024

3Clínica de Medicina Familiar, Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado, Predio Canoas S/N, 34079 Durango, Mexico.

Abdominal pain has been rarely reported in individuals infected with Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii). The aim of this study was to determine the association between T.

The metabolic conditions that prevail during bacterial growth have evolved with the faithful operation of repair systems that recognize and eliminate DNA lesions caused by intracellular and exogenous agents. This idea is supported by the low rate of spontaneous mutations (10) that occur in replicating cells, maintaining genome integrity. In contrast, when growth and/or replication cease, bacteria frequently process DNA lesions in an error-prone manner.

We aimed to determine the association between the seropositivity to Toxoplasma gondii and the ABO and Rh blood groups in 2,053 people. ABO and Rhesus blood groups and anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies were determined using commercially available assays.

The rapid growth of genomics techniques has revolutionized and impacted, greatly and positively, the knowledge of toxicology, ushering it into a "new era": the era of genomic technology (GT). This great advance permits us to analyze the whole genome, to know the gene response to toxicants and environmental stressors, and to determine the specific profiles of gene expression, among many other approaches. The aim of this work was to compile and narrate the recent research on GT during the last 2 years (2020-2022).

Background: Simultaneous breast reshaping and abdominoplasty offer patients the opportunity to undergo body reshaping in a single surgical session involving one anesthesia induction and one incision. In Latin America, abdominal implant placement is an infrequently used technique, likely because there is little evidence on its efficacy and safety. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of implant placement through the abdominal route.

The triglycerides and glucose index is highly associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in overweight and obese women.

Ir J Med Sci

December 2023

Unidad de Investigación Biomédica, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Durango, Durango, México.

Background: Although some previous studies have indicated that the triglycerides and glucose (TyG) index is associated with an increased risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), there are still few studies in this field.

Aims: The goal of this study was to assess whether the TyG index is associated with the presence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease NAFLD in overweight and obese women.

Methods: Overweight and obese women aged 20 to 65 years were enrolled in a cross-sectional study and allocated into the groups with and without NAFLD.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease has become the most common liver disorder worldwide, reaching a prevalence of 60% and 24% in patients with chronic liver disease and the general population, respectively. Liver function is often assessed using standard liver tests such as alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, and alkaline phosphatase. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the potential beneficial effects of coffee consumption on liver function are scarce and their results are inconclusive.

Spontaneous DNA deamination is a potential source of transition mutations. In , EndoV, a component of the alternative excision repair pathway (AER), counteracts the mutagenicity of base deamination-induced mispairs. Here, we report that the mismatch repair (MMR) system, MutSL, prevents the harmful effects of HNO, a deaminating agent of Cytosine (C), Adenine (A), and Guanine (G).

Toxoplasma gondii infection and insomnia: A case control seroprevalence study.

PLoS One

June 2022

Clínica de Medicina Familiar, Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado, Durango, Mexico.

We determined the association between Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection and insomnia. Through an age-and gender-matched case-control study, 577 people with insomnia (cases) and 577 people without insomnia (controls) were tested for anti-T.

Exposure to organophosphorus pesticides is an important public health issue due to a large number of occupationally exposed populations, as well as their effects mainly at the level of the nervous, reproductive, and immune systems. It has been reported that one of the molecular mechanisms by which adverse effects of exposure to organophosphorus pesticides can be explained is oxidative stress, which leads to alterations at the cellular level that, if chronic, could affect the functionality of different organs and tissues. These data constitute the basis of the relevant literature on its toxicity.

Hepatitis E Virus Infection and Butchers: A Case-Control Seroprevalence Study.

Gastroenterology Res

April 2021

Biomedical Research Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine and Nutrition, Juarez University of Durango State, Avenida Universidad S/N, 34000 Durango, Dgo, Mexico.

Background: Very few case-control studies to assess the risk of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in meat workers have been published. Therefore, we sought to determine: 1) the association of HEV IgG seropositivity and the occupation of butcher; and 2) the sociodemographic, work, clinical and behavioral characteristics of butchers associated with HEV exposure.

Methods: We performed a case-control seroprevalence study of 101 butchers (mean age: 38.

Whether waste pickers are a risk group for hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is largely unknown. This study aimed to determine the association between HEV exposure and the occupation of waste pickers and the work characteristics of waste pickers. An age-and gender-matched case-control seroprevalence study of 86 waste pickers and 86 control subjects of the general population was performed.

Cr(VI) is mutagenic and teratogenic and considered an environmental pollutant of increasing concern. The use of microbial enzymes that convert this ion into its less toxic reduced insoluble form, Cr(III), represents a valuable bioremediation strategy. In this study, we examined the YhdA enzyme, which belongs to the family of NADPH-dependent flavin mononucleotide oxide reductases and possesses azo-reductase activity as a factor that upon overexpression confers protection on from the cytotoxic effects promoted by Cr(VI) and counteracts the mutagenic effects of the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-promoted lesion 8-OxoG.
