Background: Symptomatic but unruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a potentially fatal disease since its etiopathogenesis, involving acute changes in the aortic wall, including inflammation, increasing the probability of impending rupture. The objective of the present study was to assess the prognostic value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in patients undergoing urgent symptomatic AAA repair.
Methods: This was a retrospective study including 29 patients with symptomatic AAA repaired between 2011 and 2020.

Total hip arthroplasty, one of the most successful orthopaedic procedures, is influenced by several variables. Corrosion at the modular junction is known as trunnionosis. Despite being reported infrequently, corrosion between the femoral head and the Morse taper can result in severe complications.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been quoted as "the operation of the century", owing to its efficacy and the substantial improvements evidenced with respect to functional patient outcomes and quality of life. However, early postoperative complications are often inevitable, hence it is imperative to take every step to prevent them and minimise morbidity and mortality. This manuscript focuses on the most common early complications following THA, namely venous thromboembolism (VTE), prosthetic joint infection, periprosthetic fracture, instability, and leg length inequality.

Objectives: In this observational, analytical, cross-sectional study we aimed to describe the impact of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) on work productivity and activities of daily living (ADL) to assess the association between ADL impairment and clinical manifestations and to compare ADL impairment according to patients' socioeconomic condition.
Methods: Patients diagnosed with pSS attending 11 centres from Argentina were included. To evaluate work productivity and ADL impairment, a work productivity and activity impairment questionnaire (WPAI) was used.

Background: To detect an early increase in the inflammatory response might prove to be vital for mitigating the deleterious effects of the disease over time.
Cases: A 52-year-old obese man with moderate asthma and hypertension, who developed COVID-19 and had moderate symptoms, used a wearable device to record heart rate variability (HRV) during his illness. He had low parasympathetic tone, which decreased daily until it reached almost 2 standard deviations (SD) below normal values at the end of the second week.

Background: Ceramic-on-ceramic bearings permit the use of large femoral head size while maintaining a favorable effect on wear rates. However, because of increased device rigidity, periprosthetic bone quality could be negatively affected due to stress shielding. The purpose of this study is to assess pelvic periprosthetic bone remodeling around a monoblock ceramic-on-ceramic acetabular component compared to that around a conventional modular metal-on-polyethylene device.

Introduction: Percutaneous cement discoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure to treat low back pain due to advanced degenerative disc disease in elderly patients. Complications of this procedure has been described such as infection, vertebral fracture, cement leakage and nerve injury. Intraoperative neuromonitoring is used to detect the latter.

Nucleotide excision repair pathway (NER) is an essential mechanism for single-strand breaks (SSB) repair while xeroderma pigmentosum family (XPA to XPG) is the most important system to NER. Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a heterogeneous hematological cancer characterized by cytopenias and risk of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) transformation. MDS pathogenesis has been associated with problems of DNA repair system.

Background: The ideal dose of intravenous glucocorticoids to control pain in total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains unclear. This randomized controlled trial compared postoperative pain and tramadol requirement in patients undergoing unilateral primary THA who received one versus two perioperative doses of dexamethasone.
Methods: Patients consented to undergo blinded, simple randomization to either one (at anesthetic induction [1D-group]: 54 patients) or two (with an additional dose 8 hours after surgery [2D-group]: 61 patients) perioperative doses of 8-mg intravenous dexamethasone.

Total hip arthroplasty is one of the most common and successful orthopaedic procedures performed worldwide. Uncemented modular acetabular components and highly cross-linked polyethylene liners are the implants of choice for most arthroplasty surgeons. However, despite their well-known benefits, highly cross-linked polyethylene liners are not without complications, such as rim fracture, rupture and dissociation.

Purpose: To compare the biomechanical properties of three plate stabilization techniques for midshaft clavicle fractures: anatomical bicortical locking construct, anatomical unicortical locking construct, and reconstruction bicortical locking construct.
Methods: We analyzed superior plating of the clavicle using an anatomical clavicle plate (Acumed) with both bicortical or unicortical screw fixation and a locking reconstruction plate (DePuy-Synthes). Twenty-one fourth generation composite clavicles were used for non-destructive stiffness testing in axial loading, bending, and torsion.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of a high efficiency rapid standardized OR (RAPSTOR) for hemithyroid/parathyroid surgery using standardized equipment sets (SES) and consecutive case scheduling (CCS) on turnover times (TOT), average case volumes, patient outcomes, hospital costs and OR efficiency/stress.
Methods: Patients requiring hemithyroidectomy (primary or completion) or unilateral parathyroidectomy in a single surgeon's practice were scheduled consecutively with SES. Retrospective control groups were classified as sequential (CS) or non-sequential (CNS).

Background: Posterior cranial fossa (PCF) is an important area in terms of anatomy and surgery. It is a common site of many neoplastic, vascular, and degenerative lesions. Craniovertebral surgeries require special attention regarding detailed information about the morphology and morphometry of this region.

Aims: There is a paucity of long-term studies analyzing risk factors for failure after single-stage revision for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total hip arthroplasty (THA). We report the mid- to long-term septic and non-septic failure rate of single-stage revision for PJI after THA.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 88 cases which met the Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS) criteria for PJI.

Aims: We aimed to compare the implant survival, complications, readmissions, and mortality of Vancouver B2 periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFFs) treated with internal fixation with that of B1 PFFs treated with internal fixation and B2 fractures treated with revision arthroplasty.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 112 PFFs, of which 47 (42%) B1 and 27 (24%) B2 PFFs were treated with internal fixation, whereas 38 (34%) B2 fractures underwent revision arthroplasty. Decision to perform internal fixation for B2 PFFs was based on specific radiological (polished femoral components, intact bone-cement interface) and clinical criteria (low-demand patient).

Introduction: Available intracystic biomarkers show a limited accuracy for characterizing cystic pancreatic lesions (CPL). Glucose is an attractive alternative due to its availability, low cost and the possibility of on-site quantification by glucometry.
Aim: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of on-site glucometry from samples obtained by EUS-FNA in the differential diagnosis between mucinous from non-mucinous CPL.

Background: Balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV) has been typically performed through a femoral approach thus increasing the risk of bleeding and access site-related vascular complications. The aim of this study was to describe the safety and efficacy of transradial aortic valve valvuloplasty (TRBAV).
Methods: The present research is a retrospective, single-center study including patients undergoing TRBAV (October 2019-July 2020).
