Transforming Agro-Industrial Waste into Bioplastic Coating Films.

Addressing the environmental impact of agro-industrial waste, this study explores the transformation of banana, potato, and orange peels into bioplastics suitable for thin coating films. We prepared six extracts at 100 g/L, encompassing individual (banana peel, BP; orange peel, OP; and potato peel, PP) and combined [BP/OP, BP/PP, and BP/OP/PP] formulations, with yeast mold (YM) medium serving as the control. Utilizing the spin-coating method, we applied 1 mL of each sample at 1000 rpm for 1 min to create the films.

A New Case Report of Traboulsi Syndrome: A Literature Review and Insights Into Genotype-Phenotype Correlations.

Traboulsi syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by facial dysmorphism, lens subluxation, anterior segment anomalies, and spontaneous filtering blebs. The syndrome is due to mutations in the gene, which plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of the lens. This case report describes the clinical and genetic findings in a Mexican male with Traboulsi syndrome, highlighting the identification of a novel variant.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and Dropout in Diabetic Patients with Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy.

This study aims to compare meibomian gland (MG) dropout and MG dysfunction (MGD) between patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) with moderate-severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and patients with no diabetes (NDM). This prospective, transversal, age, and gender-matched case-control study included 98 DM and 106 NDM eyes. Dry eye disease (DED) and MGD evaluations were performed, including meibography (Keratograph 5M).

Association between genes and susceptibility to inflammatory bowel disease: An updated meta-analysis.

Background: Several studies have associated members of the genes as susceptibility factors to inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD): ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD).

Objectives: To assess the association between the presence and absence genes and IBD susceptibility through a meta-analysis.

Method: A systematic search was performed through the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases to obtain relevant articles published before March 2024.

The ocular surface inflammatory disorders (OSIDs) comprise a group of conditions characterized by persistent inflammation of the ocular surface and adnexal tissues. Systemic autoimmune diseases and hypersensitivity reactions cause them, and, if left untreated, can result in severe inflammatory dry eye, corneal damage, and vision loss. Ocular graft-versus-host disease (oGVHD) forms part of the ocular surface inflammatory disease umbrella.

Face Mask and Tear Film Stability: A Pilot Study of the Objective Measurement of Tear Break-Up Time.

(1) Background: Mask-associated dry eye (MADE) has been associated with increased dry eye symptoms, apparently due to reduced tear break-up time (TBUT). Background: Wieacker-Wolff syndrome is an ultra-rare disease with X-linked inheritance characterized by arthrogryposis, intellectual disability, microcephaly, and distal limb muscle atrophy. Ophthalmic abnormalities such as ptosis, strabismus, and oculomotor apraxia have been reported in half of the patients. Wieacker-Wolff syndrome female-restricted (WRWFFR) is an even rarer disease recently used for females with a more severe phenotype.

Eye strain when performing tasks reliant on a digital environment can cause discomfort, affecting productivity and quality of life. Digital eye strain (the preferred terminology) was defined as "the development or exacerbation of recurrent ocular symptoms and/or signs related specifically to digital device screen viewing". Digital eye strain prevalence of up to 97% has been reported, due to no previously agreed definition/diagnostic criteria and limitations of current questionnaires which fail to differentiate such symptoms from those arising from non-digital tasks.

Spontaneous closure of an idiopathic macular hole after epiretinal membrane development.

Purpose: To report non-operative closure of an idiopathic full thickness macular hole (FTMH) spontaneous secondary to the development of a macular epiretinal membrane (ERM).

Observations: A 68-year-old woman, with no relevant medical history, and a 6-month history of decreased visual acuity in her right eye was diagnosed to have an idiopathic FTMH. The patient refused surgery and the FTMH was followed-up for seven years.

Our study describes an IRD patient carrying and pathogenic biallelic mutations as a result of paternal uniparental disomy (UPD) in chromosome 1. The proband is a 9-year-old girl born from non-consanguineous parents.

Introduction And Importance: Toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) is an acute sterile inflammation of the anterior segment which may occur after surgery. This case presents endothelial cell density (ECD) loss due to months of TASS caused by intraocular migration of ocular ointment. The chronicity of this case and the clinical consequences are rare in the literature.

Repair of ovine peripheral nerve injuries with xenogeneic human acellular sciatic nerves prerecellularized with allogeneic Schwann-like cells-an innovative and promising approach.

Introduction: The iatrogenic effects of repairing peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) with autografts (AGTs) encouraged the present study to involve a new approach consisting of grafting xenogeneic prerecellularized allogeneic cells instead of AGTs.

Methods: We compared sheep's AGT regenerative and functional capacity with decellularized human nerves prerecellularized with allogeneic Schwann-like cell xenografts (onwards called xenografts). Mesenchymal stem cells were isolated from ovine adipose tissue and induced in vitro to differentiate into Schwann-like cells (SLCs).
