Introduction: Pavlovian fear conditioning is an experimental paradigm used to study the acquisition and extinction of fear responses and the various aspects of fear and anxiety. We developed a virtual reality (VR) version of this paradigm to leverage the benefits of virtual reality, such as ecological validity, standardization, safety, and therapeutic applications. Our objective was to create an open-source and immersive environment for studying fear-related responses using Unity Engine 3D and the Oculus Rift device.

The DNA-binding with one finger (Dof) gene family is a class of plant-specific transcription factors involved in diverse biological processes, including response to biotic and abiotic stresses. Members of this family have been reported in the cultivated potato Solanum tuberosum, but clues to the roles of several Dof genes are still lacking. Potato wild relatives represent a genetic reservoir for breeding as they could provide useful alleles for adaptation to the environment and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses.

Chrysin (CHR) is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in the human diet, recognized for its potential in preventing neurodegenerative diseases. However, its limited water solubility restricts its bioavailability and therapeutic applications. To address this issue and bolster the neuroprotective properties of CHR for potential nutraceutical or medicinal use, we investigated a novel compound, LQFM280, formed by conjugating CHR with β-d-glucose tetraacetate.

Introduction: Patient-reported measures are an invaluable resource for health systems to improve the quality of healthcare services. Patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) are an under-represented group within the stream of literature on collecting and using the experiences and outcomes reported by patients to improve healthcare performance. This protocol outlines the methodology to implement a longitudinal survey in Tuscany, Italy, to systematically gather patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) for patients with HCV, with a focus on the integration of primary and hospital care.

Article Synopsis
  • Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis can lead to pouch failure, requiring pouch excision, with traditional open surgery having potential complications; robotic and laparoscopic methods are being explored but lack extensive comparative data.* -
  • A study at Mayo Clinic followed 123 patients who had pouch excision using robotic, laparoscopic, and open techniques between 2015 and 2023, focusing on various surgical outcomes and complications.* -
  • Findings showed that robotic surgery had longer operation times but significantly lower blood loss and postoperative complications compared to open surgery, along with fewer required preoperative ureteral stents and pelvic drainages.*

  • This research focuses on developing a multilayer biomaterial patch that incorporates LTX-109, an antimicrobial peptide aimed at treating bacterial skin infections.
  • The patch has a layered structure: a protective outer layer, a medicated middle layer with LTX-109, and a bottom layer designed to control the release of the peptide.
  • Extensive testing shows the patch effectively promotes wound healing by controlling moisture, allowing oxygen flow, being biodegradable and biocompatible, and maintaining the antibacterial properties of LTX-109.

Background: The decision to administer palliative radiotherapy (RT) to patients with bone metastases (BMs), as well as the selection of treatment protocols (dose, fractionation), requires an accurate assessment of survival expectancy. In this study, we aimed to develop three predictive models (PMs) to estimate short-, intermediate-, and long-term overall survival (OS) for patients in this clinical setting.

Materials And Methods: This study constitutes a sub-analysis of the PRAIS trial, a longitudinal observational study collecting data from patients referred to participating centers to receive palliative RT for cancer-induced bone pain.

Chronic pain is a pathological condition affecting about 30% of population. It represents a relevant social-health issue worldwide, and it is considered a significant source of human suffering and disability, strongly affecting patients' quality of life. Despite several pharmacological strategies to guarantee an adequate pain management have been proposed over the years, opioids still represent one of the primary choices for treating moderate-to-severe pain in both cancer and non-cancer patients.
