The light excitation of P-960 results in the oxidation of P-960 and the reduction of P-800 (bacteriophytin b-800) in the reaction centers from Rhodopseudomonas viridis. A negative 847 nm band of the circular dichroism psectrum disappears under P-960 photooxidation, while a positive 827 nm band disappears under P-800 photoreduction. Exciton interaction of the pigment molecules in the reaction center is discussed.

In contrast to diradicals connected by alternant hydrocarbons, only a few studies on those connected by nonalternant hydrocarbons have been reported. The syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of azulene-1,3-diyl linked bis(nitronyl nitroxide) (NN Az) and bis(iminonitroxide) (IN Az) diradicals and their Cu(hfac) (hfac=hexafluoroacetylacetonate) complexes were investigated. NN Az was shown to have an intramolecular ferromagnetic interaction with J /k =+10.

Submillisecond dark-light changes of the yield (induction) and anisotropy of fluorescence under laser diode excitation were measured in the photosynthetic reaction center of the purple bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Narrow band (1-2 nm) laser diodes emitting at 808 and 865 nm were used to selectively excite the accessory bacteriochlorophyll (B, 800 nm) or the upper excitonic state of the bacteriochlorophyll dimer (P-, 810 nm) and the lower excitonic state of the dimer (P+, 865 nm), respectively. The fluorescence spectrum of the wild type showed two bands centered at 850 nm (B) and 910 nm (P-).

Clinical effects of doxifluridine (group A, 600 mg/body/day; group B, 800 mg/body/day) combined with radiotherapy and immunotherapy were evaluated in patients with advanced cancer of the uterine cervix. Response rates were 84.2% (16/19 patients) in group A and 100% (18/18 patients) in group B, respectively (p=0.

Adverse reactions to the standard dose (1,200 mg/day-1,500 mg/day) of azidothymidine (AZT) are serious. An in vitro pharmacokinetic study of intracellular AZT-5'-triphosphate suggested the feasibility of a clinical trial with reduced doses of AZT. A randomized trial with reduced doses of AZT (group A; 400 mg/day, n = 15, group B; 800 mg/day, n = 13), was conducted enrolling 28 patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection.
