In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time the focusing of gigahertz coherent phonon pulses propagating in water using picosecond ultrasonics and Brillouin light scattering. We achieve this by using planar Fresnel zone plate and concave lenses with different focal lengths. Pump light illuminating the optoacoustic lens generates a focusing acoustic field, and Brillouin scattered probe light allows the acoustic field to be continuously monitored over time.

Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) spectroscopy is a non-invasive, non-contact, label-free optical technique that can provide information on the mechanical properties of a material on the sub-micron scale. Over the last decade it has seen increased applications in the life sciences, driven by the observed significance of mechanical properties in biological processes, the realization of more sensitive BLS spectrometers and its extension to an imaging modality. As with other spectroscopic techniques, BLS measurements not only detect signals characteristic of the investigated sample, but also of the experimental apparatus, and can be significantly affected by measurement conditions.

In this work, Brillouin light-scattering spectroscopy and optical backscattering reflectometry (OBR) using Mg-silica-NP-doped distributed sensing fibers were employed for monitoring local GHz visco-elastic properties and surface temperature, respectively, laser driven heating and ablation of chicken tissues. The spatial temperature distribution measured by OBR at various infrared laser heating powers and times was used to validate spatio-temporal local temperature variations modeled by the finite element method via solving Pennes' bioheat conduction equation. The reduction of viscosity and stiffness in chicken skin during its laser heating was attributed to water loss, protein denaturation and change in lipid phase behavior.

Polymer colloidal crystals (PCCs) have been widely explored as acoustic and optical metamaterials and as templates for nanolithography. However, fabrication impurities and fragility of the self-assembled structures are critical bottlenecks for the device's efficiency and applications. We have demonstrated that temperature-assisted pressure [ annealing results in the mechanical strengthening of PCCs, which improves with the annealing temperature.
