Raman spectroscopy has demonstrated significant potential in molecular detection, analysis, and identification, particularly when it adopts single-molecule surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SM-SERS) substrates. A recent SM-SERS scheme incorporates two-fold Raman enhancement mechanisms: the electromagnetic enhancement enabled by a plasmonic nanogap hotspot formed from gold sphere nanoparticles sitting on a gold mirror and the chemical enhancement enabled by a two-dimensional material, WS, inserted into the nanogap. In this work we integrate multiple advanced concepts and techniques to achieve remarkable performance improvements of SM-SERS.

Unlabelled: Face masks became a part of everyday life during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Previous studies showed that the face cognition mechanism involves holistic face processing, and the absence of face features could lower the cognition ability. This is opposed to the experience during the pandemic, when people could correctly recognize faces, although the mask covered a part of the face.

Morphological covariates of the ontogenetic shift from nauplii to copepodite prey in larval fish.

J Fish Biol

March 2025

Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Centre, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, St. John's, Newfoundland Island, Canada.

Larval fish are active planktonic predators, with many species feeding initially on copepod nauplii and gradually shifting their selection to copepodites. This study evaluated whether it is possible to develop a general widely applicable empirical model to describe the transition from feeding on copepod nauplii to copepodites in relation to body length, maxilla length and eye diameter. The study also evaluated whether the switch to copepodites is linked to what prey are in the stomach or which copepodite species are replacing nauplii in the diet was also considered.
