Background: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and Adjustment Disorder (AdjD) are highly prevalent among military personnel, often presenting diagnostic challenges due to overlapping symptoms and reliance on self-reporting. The amygdala, particularly the basolateral complex involved in fear-related memory formation and extinction recall, plays a crucial role in emotional processing. Abnormalities in these amygdala nuclei are implicated in PTSD and may distinguish it from other disorders like MDD and AdjD, where these mechanisms are less central.

Automatic memory associations between trauma reminders and cannabis use have been suggested as contributing mechanisms. These associations can be studied experimentally by manipulating trauma cue exposure in a cue-reactivity paradigm (CRP) and examining effects on the accessibility of cannabis information in memory in trauma survivors with and without PTSD.

Background: Self-narratives about traumatic experiences and symptoms are informative for early identification of potential patients; however, their use in clinical screening is limited. This study aimed to develop an automated screening method that analyzes self-narratives of early adolescent earthquake survivors to screen for PTSD in a timely and effective manner.
Methods: An inquiry-based questionnaire consisting of a series of open-ended questions about trauma history and psychological symptoms, was designed to simulate the clinical structured interviews based on the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, and was used to collect self-narratives from 430 survivors who experienced the Ya'an earthquake in Sichuan Province, China.

Impairments in sleep and affect regulation are evident across a wide range of mental disorders. Understanding the sleep factors that relate to affect regulatory difficulties will inform mechanistic understanding and aid in treatment. Despite rising interest, some research challenges in this area include integrating across different clinical and non-clinical literatures investigating the role of sleep architecture (measured with polysomnography) and experimentally manipulated sleep, as well as integrating more explicit versus implicit affect regulation processes.
