Sympathetic use of latanoprost 0.005% in 30 eyes.

Acta Ophthalmol Scand Suppl

Oculistics Division, Di Venere Hospital, Bari.

Published: April 1999

In this study, the authors report their experience with latanoprost after a year's treatment of patients with various forms of glaucoma at various stages of progression. The new drug was associated also with different beta-blockers. The case file reported includes 30 eyes of 18 patients treated with latanoprost once a day in the evening. Follow-up varied from 6 months to 1 year. Except for 2 patients (3 eyes) receiving only latanoprost therapy, all the others received latanoprost in association with their on-going therapy. Results are equivalent to those described in the literature. The authors also consider the results in two groups; chronic simple glaucoma and other forms of glaucoma. From their own experience and from what is reported in the literature, the authors conclude by stressing the pressure reducing efficacy of this drug.

: The PreserFlo™ MicroShunt (PFMS) is a bleb-forming device considered to be less invasive than traditional glaucoma surgery such as trabeculectomy. This study evaluates the 1-year success rates as well as safety profile of PFMS in patients having high intraocular pressure (IOP) and/or glaucoma refractory to drop therapy with a history of prior intravitreal dexamethasone therapy. : A total of 16 eyes after PFMS implantation due to elevated IOP after intravitreal dexamethasone implant (DEX-I) administration were included in this retrospective cohort study.

Background/objectives: Micropulse laser trabeculoplasty (MLT) is gaining attention as a non-invasive treatment option for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), offering an alternative to traditional surgeries and medications. This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness, safety, and potential of MLT in glaucoma management.

Methods: This review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

Priming and release of cytokine IL-1β in microglial cells from the retina.

Exp Eye Res

January 2025

Department of Basic and Translational Science, Philadelphia, PA, 19104, United States; Department of Physiology, Philadelphia, PA, 19104, United States. Electronic address:

The P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) for extracellular ATP is implicated in several forms of retinal degeneration, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. P2X7R stimulation can trigger release of master cytokine IL-1β from microglia in the brain and from macrophages, but evidence of release from retinal microglia is indirect. Isolated mouse and rat retinal microglia, and wholemounts from CX3CR1 mice, were examined to determine if ATP induced IL-1β release directly from retinal microglial cells and if it also primed expression of IL-1β on an mRNA and protein level.

Purpose: The optic nerve (ON) is mechanically perturbed by eye movements that shift cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within its surrounding dural sheath. This study compared changes in ON length and CSF volume within the intraorbital ON sheath caused by eye movements in healthy subjects and patients with optic neuropathies.

Methods: Twenty-one healthy controls were compared with 11 patients having primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) at normal intraocular pressure (IOP), and 11 with chronic non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION).
