Flow electrolytic separation of radionuclides for interference suppression in γ-spectrometry.

Anal Chim Acta

February 2025

Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry, ETH Zürich, Vladimir-Prelog-Weg 1-5/10, Zürich, CH-8093, Switzerland; Laboratory of Radiochemistry, Centre for Nuclear Engineering and Sciences, Paul Scherrer Institute, Forschungsstrasse 111, Villigen PSI, CH-5232, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Background: The direct and accurate measurement of low-level γ-emitters in samples from nuclear facilities is a challenging task due to the presence of high activities of dominant radionuclides. In this case a complex chemical separation is required to remove interfering radionuclides prior to γ-spectrometric analysis. Several radionuclides such as, Ag, Sb, Sn and Te are of relevance for radioanalytical analysis in nuclear facilities.

We experimentally study the evolution of the magnetic moment m and exchange interaction J as a function of hydrostatic pressure in the zero-field helimagnetic phase of the strongly correlated electron system MnSi. The suppression of magnetic order at ≈1.5  GPa is shown to arise from the J collapse and not from a quantum fluctuations induced reduction of m.

Service Interruption in HIV Care Amid COVID-19 Pandemic in Myanmar: Results From Analysis of Routine Program Data 2018-2022.

J Int Assoc Provid AIDS Care

December 2024

Strategic Information Division, Population Services International, Yangon City, Myanmar.

Background: COVID-19 pandemic disrupted organized HIV screening efforts, HIV testing and management worldwide, and the impact of these disruptions from private HIV care clinics have not been examined in Myanmar. PSI/Myanmar had adapted through partner clinics, Sun Quality Health Clinics (SQH) and Lan Pya Kyel clinics (LPK), with measures like online booking, staff scheduling and awareness campaigns. The purpose of this paper was to describe whether HIV-related services changed before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Myanmar.

At the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), continuous water circulation cools fuel debris, leading to the presence of radionuclides such as Sr-30, Cs-137, and I-129 in the cooling water. These radionuclides are adsorbed and co-precipitated by various materials. Among them, I-129 is a key radionuclide for safety assessment during the final disposal of adsorbent and co-precipitation materials, owing to its long half-life and poor sorption.

Article Synopsis
  • tRNAs are essential for translation and need various modifications to work properly; researchers studied a model bacterium, K-12, to understand these modifications.
  • They conducted a synthetic lethal screen which uncovered 5 pairs of tRNA modifications that cannot coexist in certain conditions, and 15 pairs that cause growth issues when deleted together.
  • One specific gene responsible for modifying tRNAs showed the most significant impact on growth, revealing insights into how tRNA modifications influence quality control in cells.
