Elucidating the role of strange baryons (hyperons) in neutron stars requires detailed knowledge of hyperon-nucleon interactions in the light (u,d,s) quark sector. The structure of the hyperons and their excitation spectra also directly impact, and are an input to, models of big-bang nucleosynthesis. The upcoming K-long Facility will provide a much-needed intense and clean neutral strange meson beam, from which hyperons can be produced at rates where hyperon structure, hyperon-nucleon interactions and higher-order interactions can be studied with a new level of accuracy and for hitherto unreachable measurements.

We present experimental evidence that a heavy Fermi surface consisting of itinerant, charge-neutral spinons underpins both heavy-fermion-strange-metal (without f electrons) and quantum-spin-liquid states in the 4d-electron trimer lattice, Ba_{4}Nb_{1-x}Ru_{3+x}O_{12}(|x|<0.20). These two exotic states both exhibit an extraordinarily large entropy, a linear heat capacity extending into the milli-Kelvin regime, a linear thermal conductivity at low temperatures, and separation of charges and spins.

Neuronal population representation of human emotional memory.

Understanding how emotional processing modulates learning and memory is crucial for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders characterized by emotional memory dysfunction. We investigate how human medial temporal lobe (MTL) neurons support emotional memory by recording spiking activity from the hippocampus, amygdala, and entorhinal cortex during encoding and recognition sessions of an emotional memory task in patients with pharmaco-resistant epilepsy. Our findings reveal distinct representations for both remembered compared to forgotten and emotional compared to neutral scenes in single units and MTL population spiking activity.

The sports world has many prejudices that have been converted into common sense. Some relate to the idea of athletes being strong or pretty but endowed with little intelligence. There is another view, perhaps a little more accurate, around the reification of consciousness in the name of the automation and maximum outcome of the body.

Article Synopsis
  • The colonization model highlights that various species can coexist through competition for habitable sites, based on how propagules encounter those sites.
  • Traditional assumptions indicate that species distribution can reach an equilibrium state, but varying encounter processes reveal different dynamics.
  • The study found that species frequencies show continuous variation and are influenced by initial conditions, resulting in unique patterns termed "strange nonchaotic attractors" (SNAs), suggesting complex competitiveness among species even in a stable environment.
