Neurocan regulates axon initial segment organization and neuronal activity.

Matrix Biol

January 2025

The neural extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulates in the form of perineuronal nets (PNNs), particularly around fast-spiking GABAergic interneurons in the cortex and hippocampus, but also around synapses and in association with the axon initial segments (AIS) and nodes of Ranvier. Increasing evidence highlights the role of Neurocan (Ncan), a brain-specific component of ECM, in the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Ncan localizes at PNNs, perisynaptically, and at the nodes of Ranvier and the AIS, highlighting its potential role in regulating axonal excitability.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

National Institute of Mental Health, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Budapest, Hungary.

Background: Growing evidence suggests that the imbalance between excitability and inhibitory neural activity is a key aspect of cognitive decline. Subclinical epileptiform activity (SEA) has been indicated as a marker of increased cortical excitability. While SEA is considered as a benign EEG sign in the elderly population, recent studies demonstrated its role in the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

The brain attends to environmental rhythms by aligning the phase of internal oscillations. However, the factors underlying fluctuations in the strength of this phase entrainment remain largely unknown. In the present study we examined whether the strength of low-frequency EEG phase entrainment to rhythmic stimulus sequences varied with pupil size and posterior alpha-band power, thought to reflect arousal level and excitability of posterior cortical brain areas, respectively.

The Alfvén instability nonlinearly excited the energetic-particle-driven geodesic acoustic mode on the ASDEX-Upgrade tokamak, as demonstrated experimentally. The mechanism of the energetic-particle-driven geodesic acoustic mode excitation and the mode nonlinear evolution is not yet fully understood. In the present work, a first-principles simulation using the MEGA code investigated the mode properties in both the linear growth and nonlinear saturated phases.

Complexity in the Photofunctionalization of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes with Hypochlorite.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Department of Chemistry and the Smalley-Curl Institute, Rice University, Houston, Texas 77005, United States.

The reaction of aqueous suspensions of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with UV-excited sodium hypochlorite has previously been reported to be an efficient route for doping nanotubes with oxygen atoms. We have investigated how this reaction system is affected by pH level, dissolved O content, and radical scavengers and traps. Products were characterized with near-IR fluorescence, Raman, and XPS spectroscopy.
