Even after folding, proteins transiently sample unfolded or partially unfolded intermediates, and these species are often at risk of irreversible alteration ( via proteolysis, aggregation, or post-translational modification). Kinetic stability, in addition to thermodynamic stability, can directly impact protein lifetime, abundance, and the formation of alternative, sometimes disruptive states. However, we have very few measurements of protein unfolding rates or how mutations alter these rates, largely due to technical challenges associated with their measurement.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer with no targeted treatments currently available. TNBC cells participate in metabolic symbiosis, a process that optimizes tumor growth by balancing metabolic processes between glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation through increased activity by the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase B (LDHB). Metabolic symbiosis allows oxidative cancer cells to function at a similar rate as glycolytic cancer cells, increasing overall metabolic activity and proliferation.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are recalcitrant organic pollutants often detected in stormwater. Various stormwater control measures (SCMs) can remove PAHs and PCBs by filtration, adsorption, and biodegradation. However, dissolved PAHs and PCBs remain present in the treated outflow of SCMs.
