Electric Monopole Transition from the Superdeformed Band in ^{40}Ca.

Phys Rev Lett

June 2022

Department of Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Applications, Research School of Physics, The Australian National University, Canberra ACT 2601, Australia.

The electric monopole (E0) transition strength ρ^{2} for the transition connecting the third 0^{+} level, a "superdeformed" band head, to the "spherical" 0^{+} ground state in doubly magic ^{40}Ca is determined via e^{+}e^{-} pair-conversion spectroscopy. The measured value ρ^{2}(E0;0_{3}^{+}→0_{1}^{+})=2.3(5)×10^{-3} is the smallest ρ^{2}(E0;0^{+}→0^{+}) found in A<50 nuclei.

Two-particle separation energy trends in the superdeformed well.

Phys Rev Lett

April 2010

Research School of Physics and Engineering, The Australian National University, Canberra, ACT 0200 Australia.

A measurement of the energy and spin of superdeformed states in 190Hg, obtained through the observation of transitions directly linking superdeformed and normal states, expands the number of isotopes in which binding energies at superdeformation are known. Comparison with neighboring nuclei shows that two-proton separation energies are higher in the superdeformed state than in the normal state, despite the lower Coulomb barrier and lower total binding energy. This unexpected result provides a critical test for nuclear models.

Probing the order-to-chaos region in superdeformed 151Tb and 196Pb nuclei with continuum gamma transitions.

Phys Rev Lett

October 2008

Dipartimento di Fisica and INFN, Sezione di Milano,Via Celoria 16, 20133 Milano, Italy.

The gamma decay associated with the warm rotation of the superdeformed nuclei 151Tb and 196Pb has been measured with the EUROBALL IV array. Several independent quantities provide a stringent test of the population and decay dynamics in the superdeformed well. A Monte Carlo simulation of the gamma decay based on microscopic calculations gives remarkable agreement with the data only assuming a large enhancement of the B(E1) strength for 1-2 MeV gamma rays, which may be related to the evidence for octupole vibrations in both mass regions.

How to measure the spreading width for the decay of superdeformed nuclei.

Phys Rev Lett

September 2003

Physics Department, P.O. Box 210081, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona 85721, USA.

A new expression for the branching ratio for the decay via the E1 process in the normal-deformed band of superdeformed nuclei is given within a simple two-level model. Using this expression, the spreading or tunneling width gamma (downward arrow) for superdeformed decay can be expressed entirely in terms of experimentally known quantities. We show how to determine the tunneling matrix element V from the measured value of gamma (downward arrow) and a statistical model of the energy levels.

The intrinsic quadrupole moment Q(0) of superdeformed rotational bands in A approximately 150 nuclei depends on the associated single-particle configuration. We have derived an empirical formula based on the additivity of effective quadrupole moments of single-particle orbitals that describes existing measurements from (142)Sm to (152)Dy. To further test the formula, the predicted Q(0) moments for two superdeformed bands in (146)Gd of 14.
