Purpose: Increasing life expectancy and advances in cancer treatment will lead to more patients needing both radiation therapy (RT) and cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). CIEDs, including pacemakers and defibrillators, are essential for managing cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure. Telemetric monitoring of CIEDs checks battery status, lead function, settings, and diagnostic data, thereby identifying software deviations or damage.

Mechanistic Understanding of the pH-Dependent Oxygen Reduction Reaction on the Fe-N-C Surface: Linking Surface Charge to Adsorbed Oxygen-Containing Species.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Center of Nanomaterials for Renewable Energy (CNRE), State Key Laboratory of Electrical Insulation and Power Equipment, School of Electrical Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an 710049, P. R. China.

The Fe-N-C catalyst, featuring a single-atom Fe-N configuration, is regarded as one of the most promising catalytic materials for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the significant activity difference under acidic and alkaline conditions of Fe-N-C remains a long-standing puzzle. In this work, using extensive ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, we revealed that pH conditions influence ORR activity by tuning the surface charge density of the Fe-N-C surface, rather than through the direct involvement of HO or OH ions.

Stabilizing bicontinuous particle-stabilized emulsions formed solvent transfer-induced phase separation.

Soft Matter

January 2025

Van 't Hoff Laboratory of Physical and Colloid Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science, Utrecht University, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Bicontinuous particle-stabilized emulsions (bijels) are unique soft materials that combine the bulk properties of two immiscible fluids into a single interconnected structure. This structure is achieved through the formation of two interwoven fluid networks, stabilized by an interfacial layer of colloidal particles. Bijels with submicron-scale domain networks can be synthesized solvent transfer-induced phase separation (STrIPS).

Two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy is a powerful technique for measuring molecular heterogeneity and dynamics with a high spatiotemporal resolution. The methods can be applied to characterize specific residues of proteins by incorporating frequency-resolved vibrational labels. However, the time scale of dynamics that 2D IR spectroscopy can measure is limited by the vibrational label's excited-state lifetime due to the decay of 2D IR absorption bands.
