Robust, Ultrafast and Reversible Photoswitching in Bulk Polymers Enabled by Octupolar Molecule Design.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

April 2024

Institute of Advanced Materials and School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, 211189, China.

Improving the photoswitching rate and robustness of photochromic molecules in bulk solids is paramount for practical applications but remains an on-going challenge. Here, we introduce an octupolar design paradigm to develop a new family of visible light organic photoswitches, namely multi-branched octupolar Stenhouse Adducts (MOPSAs) featuring a C-symmetrical A-(D-core) architecture with a dipolar donor-acceptor (D-A) photochrome in each branch. Our design couples multi-dimensional geometric and electronic effects of MOPSAs to enable robust ultrafast reversible photoswitching in bulk polymers.

Evidence of Two-Source King Plot Nonlinearity in Spectroscopic Search for New Boson.

Phys Rev Lett

April 2022

Department of Physics and Research Laboratory of Electronics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139, USA.

Optical precision spectroscopy of isotope shifts can be used to test for new forces beyond the standard model, and to determine basic properties of atomic nuclei. We measure isotope shifts on the highly forbidden ^{2}S_{1/2}→^{2}F_{7/2} octupole transition of trapped ^{168,170,172,174,176}Yb ions. When combined with previous measurements in Yb^{+} and very recent measurements in Yb, the data reveal a King plot nonlinearity of up to 240σ.

A large octupole magnetic trap for research with atomic hydrogen.

Rev Sci Instrum

February 2022

Wihuri Physical Laboratory, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Turku, 20014 Turku, Finland.

We describe the design and performance of a large magnetic trap for storage and cooling of atomic hydrogen (H). The trap operates in the vacuum space of a dilution refrigerator at a temperature of 1.5 K.

Proof-of-Principle Direct Measurement of Landau Damping Strength at the Large Hadron Collider with an Antidamper.

Phys Rev Lett

April 2021

European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva 1211, Switzerland.

Landau damping is an essential mechanism for ensuring collective beam stability in particle accelerators. Precise knowledge of the strength of Landau damping is key to making accurate predictions on beam stability for state-of-the-art high-energy colliders. In this Letter, we demonstrate an experimental procedure that would allow quantifying the strength of Landau damping and the limits of beam stability using an active transverse feedback as a controllable source of beam coupling impedance.

A Monomaterial Nernst Thermopile with Hermaphroditic Legs.

Adv Mater

May 2021

Laboratoire de Physique et d'Etude des Matériaux (CNRS-Sorbonne Université), ESPCI, PSL Research University, Paris, 75005, France.

A large transverse thermoelectric response, known as the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) has been recently observed in several topological magnets. Building a thermopile employing this effect has been the subject of several recent propositions. Here, a thermopile is designed and built with an array of tilted adjacent crystals of Mn Sn.
