Polymers are an effective test bed for studying topological constraints in condensed matter due to a wide array of synthetically available chain topologies. When linear and ring polymers are blended together, emergent rheological properties are observed as the blend can be more viscous than either of the individual components. This emergent behavior arises since ring-linear blends can form long-lived topological constraints as the linear polymers thread the ring polymers.

Microstructures and Rheological Properties of Short-Side-Chain Perfluorosulfonic Acid in Water/2-Propanol.

Polymers (Basel)

Advanced Rheology Institute, Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai 200240, China.

The viscosity and viscoelasticity of polyelectrolyte solutions with a single electrostatic interaction have been carefully studied experimentally and theoretically. Despite some theoretical models describe experimental results well, the influence of multiple interactions (electrostatic and hydrophobic) on rheological scaling is not yet fully resolved. Herein, we systematically study the microstructures and rheological properties of short-side-chain perfluorosulfonic acid (S-PFSA), the most promising candidate of a proton exchange membrane composed of a hydrophobic backbone with hydrophilic side-chains, in water/2-propanol.

The spin-lattice relaxation rates () of fluorine nuclei in perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer membranes and their precursor solid perfluorosulfonyl fluoride (PFSF) were measured by fast field-cycling (FFC) NMR relaxometry. The XRD profiles of PFSA and PFSF are similar and show a characteristic peak, indicating the alignment of main chains. While the SAXS profiles of the PFSA membranes show two peaks, those of the solid PFSF lack the ionomer peak which is characteristic of hydrophilic side chains in the PFSA ionomer membranes.

We present a quantitative comparison of the dynamic structure factors from unentangled and strongly entangled poly(butylene oxide) (PBO) melts. As expected, the low molecular weight PBO displays Rouse dynamics, however, with very significant subdiffusive center-of-mass diffusion. The spectra from high molecular weight entangled PBO can be very well described by the dynamic structure factor based on the concept of local reptation, including the Rouse dynamics within the tube and allowing for non-Gaussian corrections.

Dynamics of wire frame glasses in two dimensions.

J Chem Phys

September 2023

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Pennsylvania, 209 South 33rd St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19104, USA.

The dynamics of wire frame particles in concentrated suspension are studied by means of a 2D model and compared to those of rod-like particles. The wire frames have bent or branched structures constructed from infinitely thin, rigid rods. In the model, a particle is surrounded by diffusing points that it cannot cross.
