The immune system is a key player in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative disorders. While brain resident immune cell-mediated neuroinflammation and peripheral immune cell (eg, T cell) infiltration into the brain have been shown to significantly contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, the nature and extent of immune responses in the brain in the context of AD and related dementias (ADRD) remain unclear. Furthermore, the roles of the peripheral immune system in driving ADRD pathology remain incompletely elucidated.

Brown algae belong to the class Phaeophyceae which are mainly multicellular, photosynthetic organisms, however they evolved independently from terrestrial plants, green and red algae. In the past years marine aquaculture involving brown algae has gained enormous momentum. In both natural environments and aquaculture, brown algae are susceptible to infection by various prokaryotic and eukaryotic parasites.

Quantum analogous spin states of ultrasonic guided waves.

Ultrasonics

February 2025

Integrated Material Assessment and Predictive Simulation Laboratory (i-MAPS), Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of South Carolina, 300 Main Street, Columbia, SC, 29201, United States. Electronic address:

In quantum mechanics, spin is a physical property that dominates the topological behaviors. While manifesting the spin states they reveal complex interaction of physical parameters in a topological media. The guided waves' inherent spin states are made of real physical spin angular momentum from the superposition of elastic waves.

Optical vortex ladder via Sisyphus pumping of Pseudospin.

Nat Commun

September 2024

The MOE Key Laboratory of Weak-Light Nonlinear Photonics, TEDA Institute of Applied Physics and School of Physics, Nankai University, Tianjin, China.

Robust high-order optical vortices are much in demand for applications in optical manipulation, optical communications, quantum entanglement and quantum computing. However, in numerous experimental settings, a controlled generation of optical vortices with arbitrary orbital angular momentum remains a challenge. Here, we present a concept of "optical vortex ladder" for the stepwise generation of optical vortices through Sisyphus pumping of pseudospin modes in photonic graphene.

Investigation of sample handling steps for accurate heparan sulphate disaccharide analysis using HPLC-MS.

August 2024

MTA-TTK Lendület (Momentum) Glycan Biomarker Research Group, Institute of Organic Chemistry, HUN-REN Research Centre for Natural Sciences, Budapest, Hungary.

Heparan sulphates (HSs), a specific class of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), are important participants of cellular signalling. Analytical characterization of GAGs requires a complex sample preparation workflow. Although a detailed stability and recovery study is available for the chondroitin sulphate GAG class, the literature concerning HS is incomplete in this regard.
