A simulation study on enhancing sterilization efficiency in medical plastics through gamma radiation optimization.

Sci Rep

November 2023

Beijing Key Laboratory of Passive Safety Technology for Nuclear Energy, School of Nuclear Science and Engineering, North China Electric Power University, Beijing, 102206, China.

Gamma radiation is progressively emerging as an effective method to enhance the sterilization efficiency of medical plastics including Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The parameters of the radiation facility will affect the efficiency of radiation sterilization. To investigate these effects, we simulate the gamma radiation sterilization performance of PVC material sample using Monte Carlo Method.

For the first time, the (d,^{2}He) reaction was successfully used in inverse kinematics to extract the Gamow-Teller transition strength in the β^{+} direction from an unstable nucleus. The new technique was made possible by the use of an active-target time-projection chamber and a magnetic spectrometer, and opens a path to addressing a range of scientific challenges, including in astrophysics and neutrino physics. In this Letter, the nucleus studied was ^{14}O, and the Gamow-Teller transition strength to ^{14}N was extracted up to an excitation energy of 22 MeV.

Linearized Pair-Density Functional Theory.

J Chem Theory Comput

June 2023

Argonne National Laboratory, 9700 South Cass Avenue, Lemont, Illinois 60439, United States.

Multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MC-PDFT) is a post-SCF multireference method that has been successful at computing ground- and excited-state energies. However, MC-PDFT is a single-state method in which the final MC-PDFT energies do not come from diagonalization of a model-space Hamiltonian matrix, and this can lead to inaccurate topologies of potential energy surfaces near locally avoided crossings and conical intersections. Therefore, in order to perform physically correct molecular dynamics with electronically excited states or to treat Jahn-Teller instabilities, it is necessary to develop a PDFT method that recovers the correct topology throughout the entire nuclear configuration space.

Direct Measurement of Hexacontatetrapole, E6 γ Decay from ^{53m}Fe.

Phys Rev Lett

March 2023

Department of Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Applications, Research School of Physics, The Australian National University, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory 2601, Australia.

The only proposed observation of a discrete, hexacontatetrapole (E6) transition in nature occurs from the T_{1/2}=2.54(2)-min decay of ^{53m}Fe. However, there are conflicting claims concerning its γ-decay branching ratio, and a rigorous interrogation of γ-ray sum contributions is lacking.

Shapes and shape evolution in the mass-130 region, including the Te, Xe, and Ba isotopes, have long been a focus of discussion in nuclear physics. This mass region consists of complex many-body systems that can behave in astonishingly simple and regular ways, as classified in the Casten symmetry triangle. By applying the shell model Hamiltonian proposed recently, we carry out calculations using the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov plus generator coordinate method, in the large model space containing the (1g_{9/2},1g_{7/2},2d_{5/2},2d_{3/2},3s_{1/2},1h_{11/2},2f_{7/2}) orbits.
