At mercury (Hg)-contaminated sites, streambank erosion can act as a main mobilizer of Hg into nearby waterbodies. Once deposited into the waters, mercury from these soils can be transformed to MeHg by microorganisms. It is therefore important to understand the solid-phase speciation of Hg in streambanks as differences in Hg speciation will have implications for Hg transport and bioavailability.

Formation of the chick primitive streak as studied in computer simulations.

We have used a computer simulation system to examine formation of the chick primitive streak and to test the proposal (Wei and Mikawa Development 127 (2000) 87) that oriented cell division could account for primitive streak elongation. We find that this proposal is inadequate to explain elongation of the streak. In contrast, a correctly patterned model streak can be generated if two putative mechanisms are operative.

We present a study of the spin dynamics of magnetic defects induced by Li substitution of the plane Cu in the normal state of YBa2Cu3O6+x. The fluctuations of the coupled Cu magnetic moments in the vicinity of Li are probed by near-neighbor 89Y and 7Li NMR spin lattice relaxation. The data indicate that the magnetic perturbation fluctuates as a single entity with a correlation time tau which scales with the local static susceptibility.
