Oxidation-reduction cycles (ORCs) on Au(111) in 0.1 M sulfuric acid solution change the electrode morphology due to the formation of many new nanosized islands. With increasing the cycle number, the roughness of the surface increases due to the formation of multiatomic-step adatom islands and pits.

For the fabrication of modern graphene devices, uniform growth of high-quality monolayer graphene on wafer scale is important. This work reports on the growth of large-scale graphene on semiconducting 8 inch Ge(110)/Si wafers by chemical vapor deposition and a DFT analysis of the growth process. CTAC-based gold nanoseed-induced concave curvature evolution of surface boundary planes from concave gold nanocube (CAuNC) to concave gold nanostar (CAuNS) has been achieved by a novel synthetic methodology simply by controlling the extent of seed used and hence the generated 'Resultant Inward Imbalanced Seeding Force (RIISF)'. The resultant CAuNS shows an excellent enhancement in catalytic activity compared to CAuNC and other intermediates as a function of curvature-induced anisotropy. Detailed characterization evaluates the presence of an enhanced number of multiple defect sites, high energy facets, larger surface area, and roughened surface which ultimately results in an increased mechanical strain, coordinately unsaturation, and multifacet-oriented anisotropic behavior suitable for positive influence on the binding affinity of CAuNSs.

We characterise the structural properties of the quasi-liquid layer (QLL) at two low-index ice surfaces in the presence of sodium chloride (Na/Cl) ions by molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the presence of a high surface density of Na/Cl pairs changes the surface melting behaviour from step-wise to gradual melting. The ions lead to an overall increase of the thickness and the disorder of the QLL, and to a low-temperature roughening transition of the air-ice interface.
