[Conspiracy theories, social polarization and crises].

Nervenarzt

November 2024

, Asternweg 65, 50259, Pulheim, Deutschland.

Objective: Social media facilitate the distribution of conspiracy theories. It is uncertain whether indeed the number of myths and also the number of those who appropriate myths has increased. Conspiracy theories have so far essentially been the subject of sociological and psychosociological research showing a general disposition to become infected irrespective of the topic of a myth.

Phonon splitting of the longitudinal and transverse optical modes (LO-TO splitting), a ubiquitous phenomenon in three-dimensional polar materials, will break down in two-dimensional (2D) polar systems. Theoretical predictions propose that the LO phonon in 2D polar monolayers becomes degenerate with the TO phonon, displaying a distinctive "V-shaped" nonanalytic behavior near the center of the Brillouin zone. However, the full experimental verification of these nonanalytic behaviors has been lacking.

Materials with negative longitudinal piezoelectric response have been a focus of recent research. So far, reported examples are mostly three-dimensional bulk materials, either compounds with strong ionic bonds or layered materials with van der Waals interlayer gaps. Here, we report the first example in two-dimensional elemental materials-the class of group-Va monolayers.

Quantum criticality in a uniaxial organic ferroelectric.

J Phys Condens Matter

October 2015

Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, J J Thomson Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 0HE, UK. CBPF, Rua Dr Xavier Sigaud 150, Urca, Rio de Janeiro, 22290-180, Brazil.

Tris-sarcosine calcium chloride (TSCC) is a highly uniaxial ferroelectric with a Curie temperature of approximately 130 K. By suppressing ferroelectricity with bromine substitution on the chlorine sites, pure single crystals were tuned through a ferroelectric quantum phase transition. The resulting quantum critical regime was investigated in detail and was found to persist up to temperatures of at least 30-40 K.

Discontinuity-free edge-diffraction model for characterization of focused wave fields.

J Opt Soc Am A Opt Image Sci Vis

March 2010

Institute of Automation and Electrometry, Russian Academy of Sciences, Prospekt Akademika Koptyuga 1, Novosibirsk 630090, Russia.

A model of discontinuity-free edge diffraction is proposed that is valid in the framework of the scalar Debye approximation and describes the formation process and approximate structure of the stationary diffracted field of a monochromatic converging spherical wave of limited angular opening throughout the whole space about the focus. The field is represented semianalytically in terms of the sum of a direct quasi-spherical wave and two edge quasi-conical waves of the zeroth and first order. The angular spectrum amplitudes of all these waves have smooth continuous variations of the real and imaginary parts in polar angle and radius, the separable nonanalytic functions defining the polar-angle variations of the amplitudes being found by optimization techniques.
