Nanobubbles are sub- micron-sized gas entities that find applications in a wide range of scientific fields. Typically, they are thought to diffuse according to Brownian motion. We report the existence of self-propelled motion of oxygen bulk nanobubbles in ultrapure water at body temperature.

When describing the tribological behaviour of technical surfaces, the need for full-length scale microtopographic characterization often arises. The self-affine of surfaces and the characterisation of self-affine using a fractal dimension and its implantation into tribological models are commonly used. The goal of our present work was to determine the frequency range of fractal behaviour of surfaces by analysing the microtopographic measurements of an anodised aluminium brake plunger.

Using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the surface properties of lithium, sodium, and potassium silicate glasses containing 25 mol % of alkali oxide. The comparison of two types of surfaces, a melt-formed surface (MS) and a fracture surface (FS), demonstrates that the influence of the alkali modifier on the surface properties depends strongly on the nature of the surface. The FS exhibits a monotonic increase of modifier concentration with increasing alkali size while the MS shows a saturation of alkali concentration when going from Na to K glasses, indicating the presence of competing mechanisms that influence the properties of a MS.

Fractal properties on self-affine surfaces of films growing under nonequilibrium conditions are important in understanding the corresponding universality class. However, measurement of the surface fractal dimension has been intensively investigated and is still very problematic. In this work, we report the behavior of the effective fractal dimension in the context of film growth involving lattice models believed to belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class.

The arrival behavior of elastic waves in a naturally fractured rock is studied based on numerical simulations. We use the discrete fracture network method to represent the distribution of a natural fracture system and employ the displacement discontinuity method to compute the propagation of elastic waves across individual fractures. We analyze macroscopic wavefield arrival properties collectively arising from the interaction between elastic waves and numerous fractures in the system.
