January 2025

Department of Environment Sciences and Engineering, The Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 166 Rosenau, Campus Box # 7431, NC 27599, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA. Electronic address:

Greywater, originating from kitchen sinks and toilets, constitutes 75-80 % of the domestic wastewater produced in homes and can be reclaimed for non-potable uses. This study synthesized novel sludge-derived aluminosilicates and alginate-polyethyleneimine (PEI) biochar composites. The aluminosilicates offer a sustainable approach to sludge management, while alginate-polyethyleneimine presents a green biochar modification approach.

Novel enhancement strategy for Hg adsorption in wastewater: Nonthermal plasma-mediated advanced modification of zero-valent iron-carbon galvanic cells with thiol functionalization.

January 2025

Interdisciplinary Research Center for Construction and Building Materials, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Dhahran, 31261, Saudi Arabia. Electronic address:

Mercury (Hg) pollution poses a critical threat to human health and the environment, necessitating urgent control measures. This study introduces a novel modification method for the common zero-valent iron-carbon (ZVI-AC) galvanic cells using a two-step process, nonthermal (NTP) irradiation followed by targeted functionalization, aiming to enhance Hg adsorption potential by adjusting the physicochemical properties of the cells. The NTP irradiated functionalized adsorbent demonstrated superior Hg adsorption performance across various concentrations and pH variations.

Centre for Water Technology (WATEC) & Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, Aarhus University, Ole Worms Allé 3, Aarhus 8000, Denmark. Electronic address:

Rare earth elements (REEs) are the "fuel" for high-tech industry, yet their selective recovery from complex waste matrices is challenging. Herein, we designed a 2D multilayered MXene TiCT adsorbent for selective extraction of REEs in a broad pH range. By establishing strong Lewis acid-base interactions, extraction capacities of TiCT to Eu(III) and Ho(III) reached 892.

The State Key Laboratory of Robotics, Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold great potential in gas separation and storage. Graph neural networks (GNNs) have proven effective in exploring structure-property relationships and discovering new MOF structures. Unlike molecular graphs, crystal graphs must consider the periodicity and patterns.

Various polycations and polyanions were sequentially adsorbed onto the gold electrode of a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring. The study focused on determining the adsorption kinetics, viscoelastic properties, and electroresponsivity of polyelectrolyte layers. For the first time, it was demonstrated that the structure (compact or expanded) of the layers can be determined by electroresponsivity.
