Scheimpflug records without distortion--a mythos?

Ophthalmic Res

Augenklinik im Klinikum Buch, Berlin, Deutschland.

Published: March 1999

The Scheimpflug principle was recommended as allowing distortion-free imaging; however, a detailed analysis reveals geometrical errors as well as distortions arising from absorption of light along the optical pathway. Correction formulas and factors will be presented and applied to the biometry of the eye.

Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy of toric intraocular lens (IOL) axis prediction between two preoperative measurement devices: the optical biometry (IOLMaster 500 or 700) and the dual Scheimpflug topography (Galilei G4).

Methods: Medical records of 64 eyes from 44 patients who underwent phacoemulsification and posterior chamber toric IOL (Zeiss AT TORBI 709M) implantation between July 2017 and January 2022 were reviewed. All patients underwent preoperative evaluation by optical biometry (IOLMaster 500 or IOLMaster 700) and Galilei G4.

Predicting corneal decompensation in Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy with Scheimpflug tomography and clinical parameters.

Indian J Ophthalmol

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Université Paris Cité, Cochin Hospital, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris, France.

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of various tomographic indices, both established and novel, in predicting endothelial decompensation leading to either spontaneous corneal transplantation or transplantation following cataract surgery in patients with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD).

Methods: In this cross-sectional, retrospective study, we reviewed the files of 93 eyes from 54 FECD patients undergoing regular follow-up. We recorded clinical metrics such as morning visual disturbance (MVD) and corrected distance visual acuity.

Introduction: This study investigates the short-term effects of prolene gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) on anterior segment parameters and corneal endothelium in patients with open-angle glaucoma.

Methods: This retrospective study included 30 eyes from 30 patients who underwent GATT surgery. Demographic data, ophthalmological examination findings, and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements using a Goldman applanation tonometer were recorded.

Unlabelled: The introduction of bidirectional corneal applanation technologies into clinical practice made possible the in vivo assessment of biomechanical properties of the fibrous tunic in myopic eyes.

Purpose: This study analyzes the potential of bidirectional corneal applanation with high-speed video recording for biomechanical control of myopia, focusing on the biomechanical parameters of the sclera and cornea.

Material And Methods: The study included 129 patients (168 eyes) with myopia ranging from -0.

Non-orthogonal spectacle correction for irregular astigmatism.

Ophthalmic Physiol Opt

January 2025

Department of Materials, Design and Manufacturing Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine whether using non-orthogonal correction (NOC) lenses could enhance visual acuity and perceived image quality for patients with keratoconus.
  • Researchers tested 18 participants and their 23 eyes opted for NOC lenses, finding that 61% of eyes showed improved best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and many reported better letter clarity and less ghosting.
  • The findings suggest that NOC lenses can be an effective option for correcting irregular astigmatism in keratoconus patients, with strong interest from participants for potential future use in spectacles.
