Penectomy: a technique to reduce blood loss.

Urology

Department of Urology, University of Tennessee, Memphis 38163, USA.

Published: February 1999

Objectives: Hemorrhage is potentially a major complication of partial or total penectomy that may result in the need for blood transfusion. The surgical technique of penectomy was evaluated to determine whether modifications may lead to reduced blood loss.

Methods: A simple technique was used to minimize blood loss during penectomy. A Penrose tourniquet was used to minimize subcutaneous bleeding, incised urethral edges were oversewn, and a noncrushing vascular clamp was placed across the corporal bodies before transection.

Results: Placement of a noncrushing vascular clamp on the corporal bodies before penectomy greatly reduced blood loss in patients who required either a partial or total penectomy. The procedure was performed in a clear field.

Conclusions: By modification of the surgical technique of partial and total penectomy, it is possible to minimize the potential complication of hemorrhage.

Oxidative stress and neuronal apoptosis could be an important factor leading to post-hemorrhagic consequences after germinal matrix hemorrhage (GMH). Previously study have indicated that relaxin 2 receptor activation initiates anti-oxidative stress and anti-apoptosis in ischemia-reperfusion injury. However, whether relaxin 2 activation can attenuate oxidative stress and neuronal apoptosis after GMH remains unknown.

Objectives: To systematically evaluate the efficacy of lateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (LUKA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in the treatment of isolated lateral compartment knee osteoarthritis (LCKO), and to provide guidance and a basis for selecting surgery in clinical practice.

Methods: Inclusion and exclusion criteria for literature were established, appropriate effect indicators were selected, and PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library, and CNKI databases were searched using a computer. The Newcastle Ottawa scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the quality of the literature.

Introduction: In 2020, 368 million people globally were affected by knee osteoarthritis, and prevalence is projected to increase with 74% by 2050. Relatively high rates of dissatisfactory results after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), as reported by approximately 20% of patients, may be caused by sub-optimal knee alignment and balancing. While mechanical alignment has traditionally been the goal, patient-specific alignment strategies are gaining interest.

Background: Numerous noncontrast computed tomography (NCCT) markers have been reported and validated as effective predictors of hematoma expansion (HE). Our objective was to develop and validate a score based on NCCT markers and clinical characteristics to predict risk of HE in acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients.

Methods: We prospectively collected spontaneous ICH patients at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University to form the development cohort (n = 395) and at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University to establish the validation cohort (n = 139).

Development and validation of a score for clinical deterioration in patients with cerebral venous thrombosis.

Neurosurg Rev

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, Beijing Friendship hospital, Capital Medical University, No. 95 Yong 'an Road, Xicheng District, Beijing, China.

Patients with cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) may experience poor response to anticoagulant therapy and delayed surgical treatment may lead to clinical deterioration. However, the factors contributing to clinical deterioration remain poorly understood. Patients with CVT from three centers between January 2017 and October 2023 were included and grouped as the development cohort and validation cohort.
