Background: Endometrial ablation by means of photodynamic therapy is currently being evaluated as an outpatient treatment for dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Photodynamic therapy requires the activation of a photosensitizer by laser light. We describe a new device specifically designed to provide light delivery to the uterus for endometrial photodynamic therapy.

Instrument: The intrauterine light probe consists of the three flexible optical fibers converging to one bundle resembling the shape of the uterine cavity. Each of the fibers contains a cylindrical light diffuser.

Experience: The intrauterine light probe was tested in removed human uteri for its capability to distribute light in a tissue-simulating scattering medium and to deliver sufficient light throughout the endometrium. The light distribution of the intrauterine light probe in the scattering medium is uniform on eight axes tested around the diffusing fibers. The pattern of light distribution in human uteri is similar to that in the medium. At the endomyometrial junction, there is still one third of the light applied to the endometrial surface whereas deeper in the myometrium, the light power drops to less than 10%.

Conclusion: We propose a device that will deliver light to the uterine cavity to induce endometrial ablation by means of photodynamic therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • The review highlights the significance of assessing body composition during pregnancy and its impact on maternal and fetal health, emphasizing the need for accurate evaluation methods.
  • Anthropometric measurements, such as body weight and skinfold thickness, are reliable, cost-effective tools for assessing maternal nutritional status and predicting potential pregnancy complications.
  • Various laboratory methods, including bioelectrical impedance analysis and ultrasound, complement anthropometric measurements in estimating body composition and facilitating early diagnosis of issues during pregnancy.

The nocturnal behaviour and reproduction patterns of Sarcophagidae species during the scotophase are largely unexplored for species in the Neotropical region. The aim of this study was to assess the light regimes under which females of Peckia (Peckia) chrysostoma (Wiedemann, 1830) and Peckia (Sarcodexia) lambens (Wiedemann, 1830) would larviposit and understand how these variables influence intrauterine development in these flies. The experiments were conducted in an experimental room (lux = 100) in two independent experiments: I.

Background: Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease, affects approximately 40 million women of reproductive age contributing to preventable anaemia during pregnancy, intrauterine growth retardation and low birth weight. In spite of the high prevalence rate of this disease among school aged children in Abakaliki, no study in Abakaliki has looked at the burden of Schistosomal infection in pregnancy with a view to determining maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Objective: To determine the association between schistosomal infection and maternal anemia, low birth weight, and other neonatal outcomes in Abakaliki.

Background: Episiotomy has specific indications that, if properly followed, can effectively prevent women from experiencing severe lacerations that may result in significant complications like anal incontinence. However, the risk factors related to episiotomy has been the center of much debate in the medical field in the past few years.

Objective: The present study used a machine learning model to predict the factors that put women at the risk of having episiotomy using intrapartum data.

Objective To evaluate the sterilization efficacy of hysteroscopy instruments using ultraviolet C (UV-C) light at a wavelength of 259 nm in the Endoscopic Diagnostic Center of the National Institute of Perinatology. Methods Consecutive patients undergoing office hysteroscopy via the Bettochi vaginoscopy technique were included, excluding those with conditions such as viable intrauterine pregnancy or acute pelvic infection. Samples were collected from six designated sites of the hysteroscope, including the inner sheath, internal holes of the inner sheath, lens, graspers, scissors, and outer sheath.
