Inflammation, a central process in numerous diseases, plays a crucial role in hepatic disorders, arthritis, cardiac conditions, and neurodegenerative ailments. Given the lack of effective anti-inflammatory drugs, it is imperative to assess inflammation severity and explore novel therapeutics. Selenocysteine (Sec), a key mediator of selenium's biological function, is closely involved in anti-inflammatory responses.

Dai-Bai-Jie, the root of the plant Marsdenia tenacissima from the Asclepiadaceae family, is well-known for its therapeutic effects in clearing heat, detoxifying, reducing swelling, and relieving pain as one of the most commonly used Dai medicine. Due to numerous structurally similar C21 steroidal compounds in Dai-Bai-Jie, chemical composition profiling has been substantially challenged. In this study, an offline two-dimensional chromatographic method (LC × SFC separation system) was developed to address these issues.

Article Synopsis
  • Lycopi herba, traditionally known for its aerial parts, has roots that contain valuable flavonoid compounds with medicinal properties, such as anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities, which have often been overlooked.
  • This study focused on improving the extraction and purification of flavonoids from L. herba roots, using techniques like ultrasound-assisted extraction and response surface methodology to achieve optimal conditions and high yields.
  • The research revealed that the purified flavonoids exhibited significant anti-proliferative effects on human fibroblast-like synoviocytes, suggesting potential benefits for treating rheumatoid arthritis and advocating for better utilization of L. herba root resources.

ICP-MS determination of background I-129 in seaweed samples around Fukushima Daiichi NPS.

Radiat Prot Dosimetry

November 2024

Radiation and Environmental Department, Disaster Prevention and Radiation Center, Fukushima Daiichi D&D Engineering Company, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc., 22 Kitahara, Ottozawa, Okuma, Futaba-gun, Fukushima 979-1301, Japan.

TEPCO planned the release of Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS)-treated water, which is decontaminated stagnated water by ALPS, to the Pacific Ocean in 2023 after diluting it more than a hundred times in accordance with the policy of the Japan government. Since the low level of I-129 can remain in ALPS-treated water, the background I-129 concentration in seaweed samples around 1F NPS before the release of ALPS-treated water was recorded in this study. The iodine in seaweed samples was extracted via TMAH alkali-dissolution, and the I-129 concentration was measured by 8900 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS.

Article Synopsis
  • A TOPAS-based optimization program has been created to accurately focus very-high-energy electron (VHEE) beams on deep-seated targets by adjusting magnetic gradients and the arrangement of quadrupole magnets.
  • The program uses three quadrupole magnets to achieve a maximum dose position deeper than 17 cm while keeping entrance and exit doses within 25% and limiting lateral size to 1 cm at the highest dose location.
  • It also combines two VHEE beams to enhance dose distribution across a target depth of 12-17 cm, achieving high dose flatness and may be useful for advanced treatment plans in radiation therapy.
