Sleep and circadian rhythms are regulated by dynamic physiologic processes that operate across multiple spatial and temporal scales. These include, but are not limited to, genetic oscillators, clearance of waste products from the brain, dynamic interplay among brain regions, and propagation of local dynamics across the cortex. The combination of these processes, modulated by environmental cues, such as light-dark cycles and work schedules, represents a complex multiscale system that regulates sleep-wake cycles and brain dynamics.

Introduction: The successful diagnosis and treatment of early-stage breast cancer enhances the quality of life of patients. As a promising alternative to recently developed magnetic resonance imaging-guided radiotherapy, we proposed fluorescence molecular imaging-guided photodynamic therapy (FMI-guided PDT), which requires no expensive equipment. In the FMI simulations, ICG-C11 which has emission peaks at near-infrared wavelengths was used as the FMI agent.

Evaluation of tooth-specific optical properties for the development of a non-invasive pulp diagnostic system using Transmitted-light plethysmography: An in vitro study.

Arch Oral Biol

January 2025

Department of Pediatric Dentistry/Dentistry for Persons with Special Needs, Division of Oral Restitution, Graduate School, Institute of Science Tokyo, Japan.

Objectives: Transmitted-light plethysmography (TLP) is an objective and non-invasive pulp diagnosis method that has already been validated for applications for incisors. However, there is a demand for TLP use in the molars, it has not yet been established for this application. This study investigated the optimal light source wavelengths for TLP in premolars, to establish a pulp diagnosis system based on measuring pulpal blood flow.

In this study, biopolymer composites based on chitosan (CS) with enhanced optical properties were functionalized using Manganese metal complexes and black tea solution dyes. The results indicate that CS with Mn-complexes can produce polymer hybrids with high absorption, high refractive index and controlled optical band gaps, with a significant reduction from 6.24 eV to 1.

Emerging Roles of TRIM56 in Antiviral Innate Immunity.

Viruses

January 2025

Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Biochemistry, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, TN 38163, USA.

The tripartite-motif protein 56 (TRIM56) is a RING-type E3 ubiquitin ligase whose functions were recently beginning to be unveiled. While the physiological role(s) of TRIM56 remains unclear, emerging evidence suggests this protein participates in host innate defense mechanisms that guard against viral infections. Interestingly, TRIM56 has been shown to pose a barrier to viruses of distinct families by utilizing its different domains.
