Background: β-Elemene (IUPAC name: (1 S,2 S,4 R)-1-ethenyl-1-methyl-2,4-bis(prop-1-en-2-yl) cyclohexane), is a natural compound found in turmeric root. Studies have demonstrated its diverse biological functions, including its anti-tumor properties, which have been extensively investigated. However, these have not yet been reviewed.

In the present study, five 4-aminophenol derivatives (4-chloro-2-(((4-hydroxyphenyl)imino)methyl)phenol(S-1), 4-((4-(dimethylamino)benzylidene)amino)phenol(S-2), 4-((3-nitrobenzylidene)amino)phenol(S-3), 4-((thiophen-2-ylmethylene)amino)phenol(S-4) and 4-((()-3-phenylallylidene)amino)phenol(S-5)) were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, H-NMR, C-NMR and elemental analyses. The synthesized compounds were tested for their antimicrobial (Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungus) and antidiabetic (α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory) activities. All the compounds showed broad-spectrum activities against the (ATCC 6538), (ATCC 4698), (ATCC 12228), (ATCC 6633), (ATCC 4617) and (ATCC 9763) strains.

With the advances in the next generation sequencing technology, huge amounts of data have been and get generated in biology. A bottleneck in dealing with such datasets lies in developing effective algorithms for extracting useful information from them. Algorithms for finding patterns in biological data pave the way for extracting crucial information from the voluminous datasets.

In 1928, Dirac published an equation that combined quantum mechanics and special relativity. Negative-energy solutions to this equation, rather than being unphysical as initially thought, represented a class of hitherto unobserved and unimagined particles-antimatter. The existence of particles of antimatter was confirmed with the discovery of the positron (or anti-electron) by Anderson in 1932, but it is still unknown why matter, rather than antimatter, survived after the Big Bang.

In continuation of our ongoing search for bioactive compounds from microbial extracts, we performed antiproliferative and/or antimalarial assays on extracts of 806 microbial species isolated from Madagascan marine organisms, on 1317 species isolated from Madagascan soil samples and on a Streptomyces species (S.4) from a marine sponge collected from the Florida Keys. This work identified active extracts from four Streptomyces isolates (S.
