Observation of the Smallest Three-Dimensional Neutral Boron Cluster.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island 02912, United States.

Despite major progress in the investigation of boron cluster anions, direct experimental study of neutral boron clusters remains a significant challenge because of the difficulty in size selection. Here we report a size-specific study of the neutral B cluster using threshold photoionization with a tunable vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser. The ionization potential of B is measured to be 8.

Novel patterns in discrete Ikeda map: Quint points and complex non-quantum chirality.

Chaos

January 2025

School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Zhengzhou University, Science Road 100, 450001 Zhengzhou, China.

In this paper, the complex and dynamically rich distribution of stable phases in the well-known discrete Ikeda map is studied in detail. The unfolding patterns of these stable phases are described through three complementary stability diagrams: the Lyapunov stability diagram, the isoperiod stability diagram, and the isospike stability diagram. The adding-doubling complexification cascade and fascinating non-quantum chiral pairs are discovered, marking the first report of such structures in discrete mapping.

This study assessed the geogenic radon potential using PECAME, an innovative tool designed to simultaneously measure soil-gas permeability and CO concentration - two key parameters for understanding radon transport in soil. Comparative field studies using the RADON-JOK device in various geological settings in Japan and Poland demonstrate the effectiveness of PECAME. These studies reveal a strong correlation between PECAME and RADON-JOK, with an R value of 0.

The understanding of phenomena falling outside the Ginzburg-Landau paradigm of phase transitions represents a key challenge in condensed matter physics. A famous class of examples is constituted by the putative deconfined quantum critical points between two symmetry-broken phases in layered quantum magnets, such as pressurised SrCu(BO). Experiments find a weak first-order transition, which simulations of relevant microscopic models can reproduce.
