Purpose: The fixation method commonly employed worldwide for treating unstable fractures of the posterior pelvic ring is the percutaneous iliosacral screw technique. However, prolonged operation time and frequent fluoroscopies result in surgical risks. This study aimed to investigate whether a new triangulation method could reduce operative and fluoroscopy times and increase the accuracy of screw placement.

Plantar sensation associates with gait instability in older adults.

J Neuroeng Rehabil

January 2025

Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA.

Background: Advanced age brings a loss of plantar sensation, represented, for example, as higher sensation thresholds in standardized testing. This is thought to contribute to an increased risk of falls among older adults - an intuitive premise that has yet to be fully investigated, especially in the context of walking balance. The purpose of this study was to quantify the association between plantar sensation and the instability elicited by a suite of walking balance perturbations that differ in direction and context in a cohort of n = 28 older adults (73.

What is the frequency of anterior syndesmosis injury in posterior malleolus fracture?

J Orthop Surg Res

January 2025

Department of Orthopedics and Rheumoorthopedics, Centre of Postgraduate Medical Education, Prof. Adam Gruca Orthopedic and Trauma Teaching Hospital, Konarskiego 13, Otwock, 05-400, Poland.

Background: Posterior malleolus fractures may be fixed to restore syndesmosis stability. However, these fractures are often accompanied by ruptures of other ligaments that stabilize the syndesmosis. This study investigates the frequency of anterior syndesmosis injury in posterior malleolus fractures and its effect on rotational stability.

Dynamic transverse mode instability (TMI) has become one of the primary limitations for power scaling of high-power fiber lasers. Experimental evidence has shown that static mode degradation can suppress the dynamic TMI effect. This study reveals the physical mechanisms behind the mitigation of dynamic TMI in two-mode fiber lasers through static mode degradation.

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is suspected to affect the distribution of stress and strain near the vertebral endplates and in the underlying bone. This scenario is worsened by the presence of metastatic lesions on the vertebrae (primarily thoracic vertebrae (60-80 %)) which increase the risk of fracture. As such, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of IVD degeneration on the internal volumetric strains and failure modes of human metastatic vertebral bodies.
