The recoil momentum imparted on the residual ion by the emission of a fast photoelectron gives rise to internal excitations of the ion. Because of this recoil, the photoionization transition is not a vertical one. By varying the photon energy and/or orientation of the system one can systematically create nuclear wave packets with different initial locations and momenta in nuclear space and thus explore nonadiabatic effects.
