White Matter Fiber Bundle Alterations Correlate with Gait and Cognitive Impairments in Parkinson's Disease based on HARDI Data.

Curr Med Imaging

January 2025

Department of Radiology, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, No. 95, Yong An Road, Xicheng District, Beijing 100050, China.

Background: The neuroanatomical basis of white matter fiber tracts in gait impairments in individuals suffering from Parkinson's Disease (PD) is unclear.

Methods: Twenty-four individuals living with PD and 29 Healthy Controls (HCs) were included. For each participant, two-shell High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging (HARDI) and high-resolution 3D structural images were acquired using the 3T MRI.

Decoding speech intent from non-frontal cortical areas.

J Neural Eng

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, 320 East Superior St, Chicago, IL 60611, USA, Chicago, Illinois, 60611, UNITED STATES.

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) have advanced greatly in decoding speech signals originating from the speech motor cortices. Primarily, these BMIs target individuals with intact speech motor cortices but who are paralyzed by disrupted connections between frontal cortices and their articulators due to brainstem stroke or motor neuron diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A few studies have shown some information outside the speech motor cortices, such as in parietal and temporal lobes, that also may be useful for BMIs.

Background/purpose: The increasing importance of computer assisted implant surgery (CAIS) in the practice of implant dentistry calls for adequate education and training of clinicians. However, limited evidence exists to support optimal educational strategies and best practices. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of distributed training with dynamic CAIS (d-CAIS) on the precision of freehand implant placement by inexperienced operators.

The cost of perspective switching: Constraints on simultaneous activation.

Psychon Bull Rev

January 2025

Department of Education and Psychology, The Open University, 1 University Road, P.O. Box 808, 4353701, Ra'anana, Israel.

Visual perspective taking often involves transitioning between perspectives, yet the cognitive mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. The current study draws on insights from task- and language-switching research to address this gap. In Experiment 1, 79 participants judged the perspective of an avatar positioned in various locations, observing either the rectangular or the square side of a rectangular cube hanging from the ceiling.

Mesoscale Modeling for Predicting Effective Properties and Damage Behavior of Geopolymer Concrete.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics, University of Plymouth, Plymouth PL4 8AA, UK.

Geopolymer concrete is a sustainable construction material and is considered as a promising alternative to traditional Portland cement concrete. However, there is still not much research on the effective properties and damage behavior of geopolymer concrete with consideration of its heterogeneous characteristics by means of mesoscale models combined with the regularized microplane damage model. Here, in this research, an easy and simpler approach for generating concrete mesoscale models and characterizing the angular characteristics of aggregate particles is presented.
